Bathe Like a Roman

Meetup member Doris McCarter works every summer in Italy doing excavations in Pompeii.  This is a summary of her presentation:

So you think you can bathe like a Roman? Well, let's see if you know what that means. This interactive presentation will teach you just how complex the institution of bathing was. To bathe like a Roman was no mere turn of the knob and rub down with a soapy wash cloth in your private bathroom. There were rules and rituals - a lot of them. And you needed to know them because every day you bathed with tens, if not hundreds, of people.

Using the classic baths of Pompeii and Herculeneum as our guides, this presentation will introduce you to all things Roman bathing - from the intimate physical act of bathing to the baths a big business to its sociopolitical place in Roman society. The 90 minute presentation will use diagrams, photos, and video to bring to life this Roman institution that surpassed even the Games as a galvanizing force of Roman society.

>>>>>  We will be in the Education Guld room, in the wing near the indoor swimming pool. <<<<<

I thought the presentation was very informative and delivered with wit and passion. I certainly wasn't bored. The photos were good and as Doris said in the beginning, it wasn't necessary to see the diagrams clearly to understand the info they contained. They were explained. I recognized many of the Pompeii sites. mille grazie!

Doris, so sorry. Can't make it. (Most of the day spent at Firestone). I'm sure it will be a fabulous presentation.

    Doris,
I likewise am interested in your work. My perspective is finding something to do (other than make lavender sachets at a convent) if I spend an extended period in Italy.
Perhaps I could insert myself in your conversation with Mike, or you could spend a bit of time talking about the logistics of your work life?

Hi Mike, I keep trying to respond to your message but it keeps bouncing back. How 'bout we talk at the end of the presentation. I love to share how (easily) I got into excavation work. It is quite doable if you are interested.
