As always, a great and stimulating line up. This month sees us concentrating on big data and a panel discussion of experts on how to break into the industry.
THE PRESENTATION: (Im)perfect Singularity, by Alvaro Marquez
Contrary to the common belief that big data offers clean readings on naked and objective truths, in actuality, big data is loaded with ideological biases, interested propositions and nuanced cultural context.
As designers, technologists and business leaders, what does it mean as we create products and services that increase, drive generation and feed from data in today’s society? What responsibilities do that carry?
In his talk, frog’s Alvaro Marquez will expose the subtle falsity of hoping to find meaning in numbers alone and shed some lights on the implicit violent paradox of transparency it creates. He will share some examples of companies that have successfully (and failed at) balancing the increasing exposure of personal information, protecting the need for privacy and juggling the fine line of pervasive global surveillance; and describe two indicative trends around the new realities that will shape the future of product and experience design.
Following that presentation, Alvaro joins a others for a panel discussion.

Jay's currently a Senior Designer at Atlassian and was IxDA Sydney's first local leader. Back in the day, Jay moved into Interaction Design from Graphic Design and Web Design. During his tours in management he reviewed hundreds of interaction design resumes and portfolios and is amazed that many designers don't design their portfolios.
