Annual Pool Party - Yukata de Somen

  • Aug 17, 2013 · 6:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Here comes our annual pool party !

We are doing the Nagashi-Somen again as a main event due to popular demand!

Flowing Noodles is called "Nagashi Somen" or Somen Nagashi" in Japanese. What is Flowing Somen? At Flowing Somen, Somen are put in water flowing along a long bamboo gutter.  You catch the noodles with your chopsticks, dip them in a cool broth, and eat them!  It is fun!   Flowing Somen should be a cool and refreshing treat in this AZ summer.

The Bon Festival takes place on the thirteenth to sixteenth of August or July in Japan. We are planning to float some Toro (lanterns) in the pool to guide the returning spirits to depart back to the other world. Lanterns are for those who have died in the past year. Traditional Japanese beliefs state that humans come from water, so the lanterns represent their bodies returning to water. Toro-nagashi is primarily done on the last evening of the Bon-festival.

Other than that, we will eat, drink, swim and meet our members. Party starts at 6PM to whenever.

We encourage you to wear Yukata (Japanese casual summer kimono) or Jinbei (Casual male wear) and bring Uchiwa (Circle hand fan) if you have them.

We will provide tables and chairs, plates, utensils, cups, water, sodas, and Toro lanterns!  :-)

Things to bring:

o A potluck dish!  It will help us get a variety if you post what you are bringing in the comments!

o Drinks.  We will have water and sodas, any other drink please bring your own (alcoholic drinks are ok).

o A swimsuit and towel!  It will be warm, and there is a refreshing pool.  There is a bathroom and changing room out by the pool that you can use.

o Yukata or Jinbei if you have one (not required)

o When you come please enter by the side gate (not the front door).

o If you know someone else who is going and can carpool, that would be nice to help us with parking.

Ok, great!  Looking forward to seeing you at this fun event !

And, yes, the Gods were watching over us. When I left your house, it was almost drier than dry but when I headed back to Phoenix, it was pouring!!

Found a few things that were left over at my house that evening, a pink tie, a black shawl, & a silver insulated tote bag. I posted a photo of them just now.

I had a great time! It was so fun to see everyone dressed up and excited about nagashi-somen! The wind picking up made things interesting! Had a great time lighting all the toro-lanterns and doing the o-bon dancing! Thanks everyone for coming!

    • scott w.

Yukiyo, you should have received a couple of emails already saying that you can come. Did you see them?

      August 12, 2013

  • Laura

Hi Scott. I got your message through a notification in my email account. Thank you! Where do I check messages sent exclusively to me on this site and where can I reply?

    August 12, 2013

    • scott w.

Hi Laura! Meetup 'mail' goes directly to your real mail (but they hide your address). There isn't an account. If the sender (me) chooses not to hide their address you can just hit reply (you'll see my real email). If the sender hides their address (or you wish to keep them from knowing yours), just click their name somewhere on the meetup site and then choose 'send a message'. That's it! Glad you got it the message, see you at the event!

So, Is there any activity like Karaoke will be going on?

    July 10, 2013

    • scott w.

Hi Kaz, the activities are eating potluck and nagashi somen, swimming in the pool, floating toros (lanterns) and socializing with other members. That's it! It was great fun last year. See you there!

      July 10, 2013

    • Kenton

Kaz: I sure hope not (LOL)!

      July 15, 2013

  • Ted L.

Again, Kazumi and I would like to do 5 or 6 Japanese songs at about 7:30 PM, with the permission of the host and organizers..

We have professional equipment, so we just need a little space and electrical outlet. The songs are mostly ballads so you can just carry on your leisurely activities..
    Arigato..

    July 10, 2013

    • scott w.

Hi Ted, we have the music covered for this event already, so no, not at this event.
