This is it! THE annual festival held in the City of Phoenix at Heritage Square Park. This festival is a celebration of Japanese heritage, culture, art and food. Check http://azmatsuri.org/...

From www.culturalnews.com/club:
"The chosen theme for the 2010 Matsuri is that of a traditional figure of a cat called Maneki Neko, which means "Lucky Cat" or "Beckoning Cat". The cat draws attention by raising one paw and holding a valuable coin in the other. Often times one will see a porcelain or metal Maneki Neko standing at the door, or just inside, a Japanese business or restaurant. The Naneki Neko appears to wave its paw to greet customers."

They have posted the schedule, it may change.

FYI: This is a double event with the 20s and 30s group.

Great as always. The events I wanted to see started later in the day so I arrived at about 12:30. I missed you guys but I did run into other meetup groups. I also bumped into Mika! She says "hi" to everyone :D

Very crowded - however lots of ideas. The festival is outgrowing Heritage Square.

I am so sorry we weren't able to meet up with the group! It took us a half-hour to get a parking spot. But aside from that, it really was a wonderful time! The kids enjoyed it so much, we can't wait until next year! ^_^

It took FOREVER to find parking! So we were unable to find and meet up with the group! Bummer. But we still had a great time! I couldn't believe how many people were there! It's nice to see that people out here have interest in other countries and cultures (or Japanese culture to say the least ^_^). The food lines never did seem to dwindle in size, but at least it was all yummy. In the end, we walked away with a couple nice things and lots of wonderful memories!

I've been going to Phoenix Matsuri for several years now, but it was much more interesting with the Meetup group. Of course, a large event like this may not be the best place for a meetup; everyone wants to go off and look at different things. Still, it was great seeing the group again. I wish more of the regulars had made their presence known.

What a great time with a great group of people! The festival was a lot of fun and if my leg hadn't been bothering me, I probably would have stayed longer. Part of the fun was riding the light rail - so much better than driving! Sorry to hear about the ticket, Carol :-( You'd think they'd be more lenient when events like these are going on, but somebody's got to help pay down the deficit (LOL).

AURGH!!! I got a parking ticket downtown. I hate the City of Phoenix (sometimes)! Fun event anyway.

Wow, the Matsuri was hopping with people! There were a lot of new people signed up but only a small group met up at the 11am rendezvous point. The place was so crowded we wouldn't have been able to hold a large group together anyway, but it would have been fun to meet some of the new folks. So, hope everyone signs up for another event and we get to meet you soon! Ja mata kondo! :)

    Light Rail! Good Idea!!

I'm planning on taking the light rail into downtown. I'll be catching it from the 101 and Apache Boulevard park & ride. If anyone is coming from the east-side and would like to join me for the ride in i'll be at the station about 9:50 to catch the 10:02 train. (Note, they run about every 15 minutes). Send me a meetup email if you need/want my phone for ease of meeting up at the park & ride. See you there!

This is a great downtown event! Actually, I think last year when Junko hosted it this was the first event that got the group going finally!
