Japanese Tie-dye & Kanzashi Hairpin Workshop

This location is shown only to members

This was very popular the last time we held one at Tokyo Mokyo. Anna had a request to offer it again, so here it is!

Workshop: Shibori Tie-Dye

We will learn today about the Japanese Tie-Dye Technique "Shibori", and learn how to do a simplified version of the age-old tradition. Shibori is used on anything from hairpieces, kimono, purses, and even underwear! Each attendee will be able to make their own shibori fabric to take home with them. Minors under the age of 13 are required have a parent present with them during the workshop.

That "Not-So-Boring" Kimono Briefing

This is for beginners wanting to get started on learning about kimono! We will discuss the different types of kimono worn, levels of formality, who wears kimono in Japan presently, and discuss how to identify the difference between a true kimono, and their many impostors. Each person will be able to wear kimono and experiment with different looks to suit their individual taste!

Kanzashi Hairpin Workshop

In this workshop, attendees with learn about the Tsumami Kanzashi Hairpins--a tradition that involves folding fabric into small petals and crafting them into flowers. We will have a brief discussion on how kanzashi is made, who wore them in the past, and who wears them now. Each attendee will be able to craft their own hairpin from real kimono textiles and take it home with them as a souvenir of this workshop. Minors under the age of 13 are advised to use the blue low temperature glue guns, or have a parent present with them during the workshop.

The cost of this workshop afternoon is $20 per person, which includes all tuition costs, a credit towards purchase of a kimono or obi from our website, and refreshments. A portion of the proceeds will also be donated towards the Morikami Japanese Gardens in Delray Beach. It will last approximately three hours, after which, participants are welcome to join us for dinner at the nearby I Ai Sushi.

No, your shibori won't be quite that fancy...it takes a long time to tie all those knots! Yes, your flower hairpin will look a whole lot like the one in the big picture (but not the ones worn by the geisha apprentice). It would take forever to make that.

Just to clarify- we will be making the 6-point kanzashi hairpins. If we had a workshop on the maiko style kanzashi, it would literally take all day in the very least. However, I will bring enough materials for each person to make 2 flowers- so if you run out of time to finish the second flower you can bring the fabric, barrette, and beads home with you. ^_^

For anyone wondering- the location will be at the same intersection as I Ai Sushi at Dale Mabry Hwy & Waters Ave. There is an Albertsons on the right facing Dale Mabry if that helps as well. ^_^

Excellent class. Great tips on kanzashi and shibori. Materials were great and the price was perfect for the experience. Anne did a fantastic job, and thanks to Esther for setting it up.
