TBD Anime (Lakeland Area) - Pom Poko

  • Jul 20, 2014 · 6:30 PM
  • Private Residence

The TBD Anime Club meets monthly in the Lakeland area to watch a few hours of a selected anime season or a movie-length title.

This is a light-hearted, fun group!  Ages range from teens to late middle aged anime fans.  Bring a snack or drink to share.

POM POKO 平成狸合戦ぽんぽこ (1994)  [from]

“I had often wondered about the tanuki. They are part of the Japanese ecosystem, but one does not know them anymore in their true biological surroundings. Only the folklore remains. According to traditional Japanese tales tanuki are able to transform into humans, and these stories stimulated my imagination.” —Isao Takahata

In this brilliant and often overlooked Studio Ghibli masterpiece, the forests are filled with groups of magical tanuki … [who] spend their days playing idly in the hillsides and squabbling over food – until the construction of a huge new Tokyo suburb clears the nearby forest and threatens their way of life.

I find it sadly amusing that the Disney translators somehow managed to turn the last word of the Japanese title, Heisei tanuki gassen ponpoko, into Two Words and spell it wrong in the process.
Disney, being the people who Never Make A Mistake, will, of course, NEVER correct this.
