What: GODZILLA AND JAPANESE CULTURE - Lecture and Reception

Since Godzilla's first appearance more than fifty years ago, the King of the Monsters has become a cinematic icon and a globally recognized symbol of Japan. Southern Methodist University?s new dean and Godzilla expert, Dr. William Tsutsui, will give a talk exploring the serious lessons to be learned from the twenty-eight Godzilla films and the abiding worldwide popularity of the King of the Monsters.

Who: William M Tsutsui is the new dean of Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences and professor of history at Southern Methodist University. Dean Tsutsui's research and teaching focus on the business, environmental, and cultural history of twentieth-century Japan. His two books, Godzilla on My Mind: Fifty Years of the King of Monsters and In Godzilla?s Footsteps: Japanese Pop Culture Icons on the Global Stage have met critical acclaim. Dean Tsutsui is the nation?s leading expert on Godzilla.
