Mattari Meetup - THIS MEETUP HAS BEEN CANCELED. SORRY, I HAVE A MEETING TO ATTEND SO I CAN'T BE THERE TO OPEN ROJI FOR YOU THIS TIME. SEE YOU IN DECEMBER MEETUP! Fall in Japan is an *Otsukimi season. (moon viewing). We can't meet at night (to cold to view moon in Syracuse right now!), we can still enjoy the dango that is traditional treats during this season. You will be tasting fall treats like: Mitarashi dango Wagashi Green Tea (High grade Hoji-cha) Let's sit down and relax with sweets and tea. Past few meetups has been event meetups that I feel like this meetup can be the time to get to know each member in casual and relaxing setting. Mattari means slang for relaxed, relaxed feeling when you are drinking tea, sinking into the comfortable couch kindda feeling. We can swap Japanese horror DVD as well for Halloween maybe? (you can drop it off at roji for someone to pick it up if you can't make it to the next meetup) $6 / person Looking forward to chit chatting with you this time. Tomomi Y. Pls. RSVP by Fri so I know how much to make. :) *お月 見( おつ きみ ) Otsukimi definition Otsukimi is a full moon viewing party. Jugoya, known as the full moon of autumn, was traditionally celebrated on the fifteenth day of the eighth month of the old lunar calendar. It originated from farmers’ religious observances ensuring a good harvest. Children believe an old tale that a rabbit is making Mochi on the moon. Since its beginning in the Edo Period, on this evening people decorate the areas of the veranda where one can view the full moon with offerings from the bounty of autumn, including Susuki (Japanese pampas grass), Hagi (bush clovers), and specially made Tukimi-Dango. by japanese-language.ne t

*** We normally hold meetups on 3rd Thursday, however due to the religious holiday, we'll have it on the following week this month. Thank you. *** Japanese Tea Ceremony Escape to the calming ritual and enjoy the green tea and accompanied sweet. The Japanese tea ceremony (chado or sado, 'the way of tea') is a traditional ritual influenced by Zen Buddhism in which powdered green tea / Matcha, is ceremonially prepared by a skilled practitioner and served to a small group of guests in a tranquil setting. (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) Matcha is made from high grade green tea. It is prepared in a grinded form, which means you are drinking the whole gooness of leaves. EARTH is the source of ceramics, tea's adornment. METAL is the resource from which kettles are fashioned. WATER, in its purest form, is the friend of tea WOOD is the substance from which tea is born FIRE is the teacher of tea in that it molds tea's character during processing and again during its brewing. Water and fire interact to release the hidden potentials of the leaf. Fee: FREE - Viewing Demonstration only $13 - Tea and Sweets included. (with reservation) Meetup members who has sign up before the RSVP dead line (Sept 12) will be served complementary sweets of roji's choice at Nihongo no Renshu. at 3pm.

Our Chef of this meetup is attending OCC Graduation ceremony on 3rd Sat - this meetup will be on 4th Sat this month. Maggie was very kind to offer her place for the picnic! She has recently got a baby Cherry tree in front of her house, so hopefully petals are going to be still attached when we meet.... Either way, it is still nice to get a fresh air outside of Maggie's beautiful home (she recently added tea ceremony room) and enjoy the bento box. Thanks Maggie. :D (I'll plan this better next year!) The picture attached to this page is her sakura tree. Lovely~~ Her house is in the newly developed are so it doesn't pin point on regular google or yahoo maps. (unless you have the latest version) So type in street name only, and it'll give you the entrance of the street. Then, drive futher down to #3903. (Her house is on the right side) Japanese Bento Box (*Homemade - style) and Tea: $16 (will need to be cash payment please) Please let me know if you are vegetarian/Vegan. *Junko-san will be preparing them at her restaurant she works, and she had an idea to make springy home-style bento, so these are different from typical Japanese restaurants around here. Since I need to pass special order through Junko-san, please RSVP a week in advance to give her accurate RSVP. Thank you for your cooperation. Tomomi Y
