Moving to Lightroom: A Primer for Capture NX2 Users

Introduction to Lightroom from a Capture NX2 User's Perspective

I made the switch to Lightroom from Nikon's Capture NX2 in 2012. Along the way, I had to retrain myself to use Lightroom's tools. Of course, I made some mistakes. If you're considering making the move to Lightroom, this class will show you the ropes so that you can avoid some common pitfalls and have a smooth transition from a Capture NX2 workflow to Lightroom.

Course Outline

• The Lightroom Environment and how it differs from CNX2
• Preparing your Nikon NEF files for import into Lightroom
• What to do with NEFs that you've edited in Capture NX2
• Basics of the Library module for file management
• Fundamentals of the Develop module for RAW processing, including local adjustments and sharpening tools
• How to process your NEFs to match Nikon's Picture Controls
• How to send images to external editors like Photoshop
• How to share images edited in Lightroom

All participants will receive a printable PDF copy of the course presentation notes.

This class is limited to 25 participants. Please RSVP by 6pm MDT on Friday, March 14th.

System Requirements

This course is online via GoToMeeting. You will need a broadband Internet connection to stream the live broadcast. For audio, you'll need a computer with speakers and a microphone or you can use a telephone.

It was an excellent session. I am not totally new to LR5, but it is very helpful to hear and rehear some of these topics.

Thanks Jason for another excellent webinar and answering my questions .Its good to know what I should be looking for when revaluating and reorganizing my older photos processed in Capture NX2 from someone who has already experienced the move .Having the editing steps in Lightroom and how they are different from those in Capture NX2 explained ,I am looking forward to trying my new skills at editing in Lightroom .

Wonderful introduction to LR. As an expert Capture user, I've been avoiding the transition to LR. But this class - and the power of LR - has me ready to jump in fully. Thanks for all the help.

Very well organized and presented webinar that clearly achieved its stated purpose. I would like to have seen much more on the Develop Module; but, of course, that topic alone is huge and time was limited. I look forward to a future webinar devoted solely to the Develop Module.

Excellent - a lot of info, but very well presented

Great session. I wasn't aware of the power of the Brush and Automask feature. I don't think I'll be missing the control points once I master the technique.

Excellent presentation of the basics of LR with assurances those of us facing the need to move away from NX2 that life will go on. Well worth the fee if you're considering such a change in workflow.

Absolutely best. Calms one down from being abandoned by Nikon

Hey Jason, Are you recording this?

    March 14, 2014

    • Jason O.

I can't. It's too long to record. I will offer another session, though.

This is great! Just what I've been looking for. I'm interested to see how Control Points can be replicated in LR.

    • Amyn N.

Same here - with many many files using Control Points.... what's the solution to replicate this...?

      March 14, 2014

    • Jason O.

      Brush tools and auto-masking

Due to the length of this presentation (3+ hours), I am not able to record it. I will, however, schedule additional classes for those who are interested.

Great, just moved to Lightroom 5 from CaptureNX2 after seeing Nikon's crippled NX-D software. Used to also use the Nikon Capture NX version of Color Efex 3. I hoping you'll cover using Photo Mechanic with Lightroom and also using the Nik Collection with Lightroom

I'd pay the $30 just for the PDF of course presentation notes but I don't how to do that without taking up one of the 25 slots. I won't be able to participate but topic is very perfect. Would certainly be willing to pay for video with emphasis on NX2 to LR move.

I think (and hope) that Jason received the message ....

      March 12, 2014

    • Amyn N.

A video right now on how to resolve this issue would be great!

      March 14, 2014

  • Philippe R.

Have had the LR5 program for a while but never made the move so happy was I with the NX2/PM pair. Now, after Nikon's decision to abandon non-destructive nef editing and control points, I more than welcome this induction session.
I trust Jason will make us love LR ;-).

    March 11, 2014

  • Don S.

Jason, I can't make this one but am very interested in moving to Lightroom from NX2--will you be offering another class in the near future. In particular, I would like to know if there are any IR processing features or work-around such as the hue adjustment on NX2, on LR.

    March 13, 2014

    • Jason O.

I will plan on offering another session of this course.

I would very much like to join but the timing is difficult for me. With the forthcoming NX D, I want to consider alternatives. Will there be another chance?

    March 13, 2014

  • Barbara W.

Would live to attend, but the time isn't good for me either. Will the video be available for purchase later on (like LR and Photo Mechanic)?

    March 12, 2014

  • Andrew P.

I'm in the same boat Jason... Definitely cannot attend the live session on 15 March, but urgently want to learn more about how to transition from CNX2 to LR. Can we at least buy the notes from this session ? Thanks. AP

    March 11, 2014

  • Doug B.

I'm in the same boat as others and can't make this date and time. Really bummed by that. Jason, anyway to buy access to a recording (if there is one) of your presentation? Thanks

    1 · March 11, 2014

  • Leonard S.

    Very timely, just acquired Lightroom

    1 · March 11, 2014

  • Gary P.

I also use PhotoMechanic and depend heavily on using the NEF embedded JPG for gallery uploads, email, and possibly 4x6 prints. How accomplish this through Lightroom?

    March 11, 2014

  • Mick K.

Timing is everything ...and mine isn't good. I'll be on an airplane at that time.

    March 11, 2014

  • Bennyd

I will not be able to follow on that day but if it is recorded I'll more than happy to buy the broadcast afterwards ...
