LORE (2012)

After her Nazi parents are imprisoned, Lore leads her younger siblings across a war-torn Germany in 1945. Amid the chaos, an encounter with a mysterious refugee forces her to rely on a person she has always been taught to hate.

    Last night, I watched Warm Bodies (Netflix dvd rental). It was one of the flicks that lost out to our July pick, Lore. I do recommend Warm Bodies. It was quite entertaining and I think it was superior to Lore, although of a totally different genre(Zombies versus a Nazi story). In some ways, Warm Bodies reminded me of Romeo and Juliet. The zombie lead was named "R." The human lead was "Julie." Coincidence? Perhaps not. John Malkovich was his usual excellent self. The young male lead actor nailed the zombie role and has a future. Most importantly, the movie wasn't really about zombies, but seemed to be about not just walking through life, but enjoying it while you can. It is a touching, well-written, well-acted, light-hearted movie with a message or two. If over-analyzed, it won't hold up to credibility standards. But, such movies are not made for such scrutiny. They are made for entertainment value and this one delivers - with humor, good acting, and morality play components.

      Warm bodies is actually based on Romeo & Juliet, so that's why the story is so similar. It is an excellent movie; I bought it because there are so many analogies in it that relate to prejudice & fear & how communication & learning to trust (& love) can lead to more harmony between people who are different in whatever capacity that is...

    The man described briefly in this obit. / eulogy TOTALLY deserves HUGE amounts of praise, and for certain, a film based on his incredibly brave and meaningful life (a great NY Times article reprinted from July 15th, 2,000). <>;

    I was not impressed much by "Lore" for a number of reasons though it was well worth experiencing it and the discussions... I made a number of errors... (I'm probably still getting older - and the older I get, the more impressive I USED to be). Not only did I blank on the current Papal update; but I also said Hitler's death was in 1944 instead of 1945. I forgot that Buchenwald was in fact a concentration camp located in central Germany (though > 350 miles from France - not as in the film). The numbers of Jews murdered by countries should have been closer to: Poland: >3million, Soviet Union >1million, Hungary: 550,000, Romania: 270,000, Germany: 142,000 Lithuania: 140,000, Netherlands: 100,000, Bohemia/Moravia: 78,000, France 77,000, Slovakia: 71,000, Latvia: 70,000, Greece: 65,000 Yugoslavia 60,000, Austria: 50,000, Belgium 25,000. Worthy of note is that in rather large areas of particularly strong Nazi influence those murdered were between 80% and 90% of the Jewish population.

    Nice time, once again. Nice, intelligent people, once again. Decent movie, but not a favorite. The prior two movies spoiled me. :)
