Rapier Con Details

Hello, Fellow Gamers!

Rapier is coming in just a couple days. If you are on the fence about going, or have questions on how things will go, then I hope this message will put that to rest.

This is a long message so feel free to skip through to the info you need: Tournament Info, Prizes, and the New Gamers' Adventure -- in that order.

TOURNAMENTS: The two tournaments for Carcassonne and Ticket to Ride: Europe will start by 9:30 am on Saturday, 6/21. You may have noticed that registration for these tournaments is not listed with the others on the Web site. I'll have registration available Saturday morning starting at 8 am, so just be signed up in time for me to randomize who is playing with whom. It's free to play, and there are prizes to the winners (see below)!

There will be enough spots for four players per game set, for a possible total of 16 players each for Carcassonne and TTR respectively. Note that these tournaments will be running at the same time, so if you want to participate in one you must pick from the two.

The winner of the first game will get 3 points, the runner-up 2 points, third player 1 point and last player no points. This schema will be the same for a 3-player game if we have odd numbers of participants and have no other option, so the winner of a 3-player game will still get 3 points, the runner-up 2 points and the last player 1 point. Winners of the first round of games will play against one another, and runners-up will be the alternates (ranked by points scored) as needed.

Please note that the TTR: Europe board is a very tight, competitive board that requires the use of more wild cards. It can be frustrating, so bring your calming mantra phrase to the table! :) To start this game on more-equal footing, I will have the 4 starting objectives dealt so that each player begins with the same number of potential points (44, if you're curious: a 20- or 21-pointer with an 8- or 7-pointer, plus two more 8-pointers). From there, you're on your own!

Of course, I'll be around to answer questions, and one or both of my wonderful helpers, Doug Dinneen and Fred Bennett, may be floating around as well. They'll have snazzy buttons on their shirts to tell who they are.

PRIZES: Prizes for the winner of the Carcassonne tournament include appropriately Carcassonne-y items brought to us by the manufacturer, Z-Man games: 2 expansions, some snazzy meeples, coasters and a plushie. Prizes for the winner of the TTR: Europe tournament include 2 $10 gift certificates ($20 total) to Cool Stuff Games.

NEW GAMERS' EVENT: The New Gamers' Adventure Event will start at 2 pm, but I'll have sign-up for that available as soon as the tournaments are finished (no later than 12 pm, I expect). I will already have the Game List printed for you to pick up and review. After you sign up, I'll have slips of paper for you to write down the name of the game and your rank. Doug and Fred and I will be on hand to help with the games and get you settled in. This is mostly for fun and to encourage folks who are newer to games to try out some different stuff, or replay a game they've only played once or twice.

*Note that these will all be entry-level games, so any game you choose should not take more than an hour and some change to finish. I've chosen games that are quick to play and that teach those mechanics you're likely to see again and again, whether at our meetups or gaming elsewhere.*

The only rules are that you must play at least 3 games, and they must be 3-4 player games. For simplicity's sake, the points values will be the same as for the tournaments: 3 points for first place, 2 for runner-up, 1 for third, none for last. Play your guts out until 5:30 if you want! The nice folks running Rapier Con have provided a trophy to the New Gamer with the most points by the end.

Don't forget the other cool stuff going on at Rapier after the New Gamer's event! There's a raffle at 6 pm on Saturday and a Games Fleamarket to follow from 6:30-7:30pm.

If you still have questions please contact me by phone, text or Meetup message. I'll be in a little later on Sunday (I'm hoping by 10 am) but I'll still have my phone on me at all times during the con to help out any way I can. See you there!
