Spring camping and 4x4 trip to Shoe Creek

  • Shoe Creek

This is our Spring Trip to Shoe Creek.

Shoe Creek is one of the best off-road trails. It has everything from tough obstacle that require large lift kits and experienced wheelers to trails for stock jeeps and first time off-roaders. As a matter of fact it was the trail I took my jeep on the very day I bought it and it was bone stock.

This is primitive camping and even though it is May, it can get cold so dress and pack appropriately. All are welcome, even the kids, but please keep the cold in mind when it comes to the little ones. We do have a private tent for bathroom facilities, but I do ask that you bring your own TP/Baby wipes.

If camping is not your cup of tea, feel free to come up for a day run on Saturday and ride the trails with us. We tend to be on the trail by 10am.

Although I will NEVER leave anyone behind on the trail, I do ask that you use common sense and do the proper maintenance and preparation to bring your rig on the mountain.

After we go over the mountain, there is a hiking trail to the top of Crabtree Falls. In fact, the picture that is the background of this site, is one of the frozen falls from a few years ago.

Final planning for the trip will be at the May meetup. You don't need to attend one in order to attend the other. We are all about having a good time, but as the name states, please leave the BS at home.

As with all of our trips, this will be a Clean-up event. That is we intend to take some time and clean any and all trash and or debris that we find on the trail. We want will be cleaning out the fire pits and bringing down as much garbage as possible. Shoe Creek is a great place to wheel and camp and I want it to stay open to the public. By keeping it clean we show the state that the people who ride it are responsible. If anyone has a Pickup Truck or Trailer that can carry out the bags, We would greatly appreciate it.

We will be meeting the Morning of the 17th at the Hooters in Hampton. If would prefer to come up later in the day due to work or other commitment that is fine. I suggest, but it is not mandatory, that you have a CB. They are invaluable while riding the trail. We ride on either Ch-4 or Ch-11(alt)

ALL attendies are required to Print, sign and bring with you the "NO BS Release and Waiver of Responsibility" and I recommend that to also keep the "Walletcard" (wallet-sized medical and emergency info card)

The "Camping Checklist" and the "Directions to Shoe Creek" are also great to have. I will be updating them as needed. All of these and more are in the "Files" section of this site.

Hope to see you all there.

I had a great time, despite some technical difficulties with my trailer. But great thanks to all who helped get it fixed and a nice gentleman down the road who welded it up for me. I made it home safe. Another great trip. Sure it was a it damp, but I had a lot of fun none the less. Thanks everyone.

Since this is going to be a large turnout, I recommend that if you have a camping porta-potty, that you bring it. When there is over 10 people, 1 tends to fill up fast. We have a 5 gallon bucket, 3 ply trash bags as liners and a toilet seat for on top. Oh yeah , and a lid to ensure no spillage on the way down the mountain. There are plenty of places to to put them out there as long as you bring everything down the mountain. Leave No Trace.

will there be a place to park a trailer at the trail head?

    April 9, 2013

    • Rob N

If you are trailering your rig there, You can park it at the Food lion. It is our last stop before we shoot up the mountain. About 15 mins away from trail head. Many have done it before with no issues..

This is a dog friendly trip, right? Jackson is great around strangers (adults and kids) and other dogs.

    • Rob N

Yup. Dogs are welcome as long as they behave. I am too old to case them through the woods. LOL
