Internal Counsel

Meetup is looking for our first internal counsel. You will be both the head of the legal team and its only member, so you will have wide authority and responsibility to set Meetup's legal practices. We currently use only outside attorneys and the volume of issues is quickly increasing. You will be the go-to person in the company for all legal issues, and will work with all levels, departments, and project teams. This position reports to the CFO.


You will be responsible for everything legal, including, but not limited to:

  • Terms of Service and Privacy Policy stewardship (Domestic and International compliance)
  • Contract review and negotiation
  • Respond to subpoenas and nastygrams
  • Patents, Trademarks, API Licensing policy development
  • Employment issues, in conjunction with Director of Team Development
  • Corporate stock administration (options, secondary sales)
  • Product review and issue spotting
  • Board of Directors administration
  • Manage outside counsel engagements and approve billing

Other activities:

  • Assist sales/biz dev teams and endeavors
  • Aid product teams to develop legal templates for organizational documents useful to Meetup Groups

The successful candidate will have:

  • Entrepreneurial gusto & a passion for taking on responsibility, and a desire to learn
  • Broad and deep knowledge of the internet, social media norms and evolution
  • High personal value placed on ethical personal and company behavior
  • JD with high academic achievements
  • Corporate legal and private company experience (5+ years)
  • Manic attention to detail
  • Ability to communicate clearly and efficiently to earn respect and instill confidence
