Heritage Day Photowalk

Celebrate Heritage day in Kensington and Belgravia - Joburgs earliest established suburbs.

This Meetup is being co-hosted with Funseekers Johannesburg Group.

We will be walking in this historical neighbourhood. Bring your cell/camera and photograph the beautiful scenery and architecture. We will visit Jeppe High School and do a photowalk in the surrounding area.

We will be meeting at 8.30am for 9am. Park on Good Hope Street across Jeppe Boys High School

Braai at Richard's place afterwards.

R10 for a copy of the famed Kensington Heritage Map (highly recommended)!

Concurrently with the Tour there will be a Photo Competition (details later).

Morning all, We'll still to work out how to run our Kensington Heritage photographic competition - but just to let you know - we have a Canon EOS 500D with 18-55 IS lens to give away as the main prize :-) FYI - there is a walking tour tomorrow by the Parktown Heritage Trust, so get to it if you'd like to take photographs to submit. There is another walk planned for November, but please watch the Jacarandas as they come into full bloom - we may get together before this meetup. Conserving Joburg - Taking a Stroll in Kensington II

We really enjoyed the walk and the tour of the school, full of history and the stories from the tour guide were great. What is his name! Thank you for organising ... lots of photo opportunities. https://plus.google.com/photos/113532861705552637802/albums/5792147749907008993

This was my first 'photowalk' and was presently surprised. Kensington and Jeppe Boys was quite fitting for heritage day. You could feel the old grandeur of the Randlords especially in the old school hall. I've posted a few pics up on Flickr at http://www.flickr.com/photos/andryn2006/sets/72157631611836106/ if people are interested in how I saw the morning through my camera. I'm always interested to see how others captured the same subject so if you have posted online tell us where we might see them. Thanks to the organisers, a great morning out!

    September 25, 2012

I'm sure I will see everyone at Jeppe Boys, but if not my address for the braai is 54 Oxford Rd, Kensington. Come when you like but I will aim to have things ready from 12.00 onwards.

PS The doorbell doesn't work shout if no-one responds.

    September 23, 2012

    • Gail Scott McDonnell W.

Heavens Richard are all Kengingtonians the same I also do not have a door bell, but I do have a spoon on a rope so you can clang any tune that you like and hopefully I will answer.

  • Mark S.

    Good evening,
looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow. If you're running late, please just go to the gate and ask the guard to let you know where we are rather than calling to let me know you're running late.

We'll be there at 8:30. Walk starts at 9. Park on Good Hope Street on Jeppe Boys side (Highlands Rd side). Map link to get directions: http://bit.ly/OIo2Nq

Willem, if you can make it to Rhodesfield I can give you that lift (like before). Meet there at 10 to eight?

    September 20, 2012

    • Willem V.

Hi, Julia can make it after all, so I will drive through with her and meet you guys there. She wants to stay for the braai, but if she can't, I'd need a lift back to a station after :)

      September 22, 2012

    • Gary De B.

It's no problem. Glad she can make it! See you Monday.

      September 22, 2012

  • Willem V.

My +1 can make it after all. She might not stay for the braai, but to keep catering simple, consider us to be in for two. If she has to go, I'll still pay for her share.

    Good morning,

Thanks to all that have signed up for our special Heritage Day Photowalk. We have a tour of Jeppe Boys arranged and for that reason have limited the numbers. There is a waiting list, so please update to No if you've RSVP'd Yes but can no longer make it.

The tour starts at 9am and there is no charge. Please aim to be there for 8:30am. Park on Good Hope Street on Jeppe Boys side (Highlands Rd side). Map link to get directions: http://bit.ly/OIo2Nq

We'll walk in the immediate surrounding area from there.

Please join us for a braai at Richards place after. Meat will be supplied. We can stop off at shops enroute to get whatever else we need. FYI: Sunrise is just before 6am and sunset at 6pm - both spectacular from Langerman's Kop at the end of Rambler Road. Note that the area is not secure and one needs to go in a group.

    September 21, 2012

  • Willem V.

Hi, it looks like my +1 won't be able to make it. I still want to come though, so I'll get a cab to the train station on this end.

Would anybody be willing to pick me up at any of the Gautrain stations in Jo'burg?

    September 20, 2012

    • jackie

you need to find out if transport is running - the strike will surely affect the gautrain - they will be part of the same union

      September 20, 2012

    • Willem V.

I can't find any mention of that strike anywhere, but I'll phone the Gautrain people and ask them if they know...

      September 20, 2012

  • Sue G.

:o oh noo I was too slow and missed the open spot

    September 19, 2012

    • Willem V.

There's a chance I might not make it because of problems with getting there on Monday. I should know by this evening if I'll have a lift or not - if not, there will be two extra spots.

I'm in for the walk and the braai. I'm new to the group, and very new to photography. Really looking forward to it.

    September 19, 2012

  • Chris H.

yes, love to come, would like to bring my daughter so that's one extra?

    September 19, 2012

  • Andrea

Hi, I'd like to take the two openings for my husband and myself. Am new to the Group and looking forward to meeting everyone

    September 19, 2012

  • Richard B.

Relax everyone. I would like to keep it as simple as possible so I will organise rolls, wors etc and braai them at my cost, no prior payment necessary. You can contribute R20 on the day if you want and bring something to drink but please don't bring additional braai meat. I offered because I would really like to host my friends from the Photowalkers at my place seeing as they will be in my neck of the woods. Can we leave it at that?

    3 · September 18, 2012

    • Richard B.

      Cool Jerome. :)

      September 18, 2012

    • Gail Scott McDonnell W.

No problem - it just looked like it was getting complicated.

      September 18, 2012

  • Gail Scott McDonnell W.

I can arrange boer rolls and bar facilities if you want at the Rhodes Park Bowls club. Then you don't have to restrict numbers. Could also take some shots in the park.

    September 18, 2012

    • jackie

guys - just check in with Rich - he might want to host. re strike - it is making a statement irrespective of working day or not.

      September 18, 2012

    • Gail Scott McDonnell W.

No problem just need to know by Friday.

      September 18, 2012

  • jackie

anybody planning on catching public transport - a big transport strike is planned for Monday

    September 18, 2012

    • Jerome W.

Surely this must be a joke as it is a public holiday and very few people will be catching public transport on the day. The strike will have no affect.

      September 18, 2012

    • Willem V.

It would have no effect, but would also not need to. Public transport is non-existent on public holidays. I tried to join Jacks and Debbie for the Troyeville tour in June 16th, after having to bribe a taxi driver to take me to a station, I still got there about two hours too late.

So strike or no strike, don't even THINK about trying public transport on Monday.

I'm still waiting to hear if someone is going from Pretoria - or if my +1 can make it. If she can't, I'll have to pull out, because I'm not getting to Jo'burg on my own on Monday, especially not before 8:30AM...

      September 18, 2012

  • Candy B.

I unfortunately can't stay for the braai afterwards

    September 18, 2012

  • Jerome W.

Or when we all arrive we give Richard or Mark the money and they the wors is bought

    September 18, 2012

  • Gary De B.

I think I see where Walter is coming from. If we bring our own meat, it will have to sit in the car all morning until we get to Richard's place.
On the other hand, Richard can't get the supplies until he has the funds....
    Dilemma....

    September 18, 2012

    • jackie

yes - we were R600 short of cash at Bishmallah .... which I would have had to foot ... but stopped everyone from leaving ...

      September 18, 2012

    • Walter P.

not really - post a bank account - its only R20

      September 18, 2012

  • jackie

Rich - suggest you cover all costs in case peeps don't pitch .. or on the sunday night get confirmation

    September 18, 2012

  • Willem V.

I still have to confirm logistics of even getting there. If I do, it's unlikely I'll be able to stay for the braai. I'll hopefully let you know by tomorrow if I can make it, otherwise I'll drop out so somebody else can get my spots.

    September 18, 2012

  • Pascal P.

FYI, I will not be staying for the braai either.

    September 18, 2012

    • jackie

will not be the same without you

      September 18, 2012

  • Mark S.

We will be meeting at 8.30am for 9am as we've arranged a special tour of Jeppe Boys School. Park on Good Hope Street in front of the school. We'll walk up Marshall Street and surrounds from there. Richard's has offered to host us for a braai at his place afterwards. I'd like to ask for contributions - perhaps R20pp for some meat, salad and snacks. Any suggestions for party planning?

    September 18, 2012
