Learn How to Cook Pakistani Cuisine

  • Sep 14, 2013 · 4:00 PM
  • Tom's House

You must pay via Paypal up front to RSVP for this event.  You do not need a Paypal account.  Just use your debit or credit card.  The money is going toward the cost of food and a small "Thank you" gift card for the instructor.  I am not making any money off of this event.

I work with a very talented cook named Faiza. She cooks incredible meals that I am very fortunate to share with her on occasion. She is passionate about sharing her food and her culture. I started a conversation with her about wanting to learn some of her recipes, and it grew to a conversation about her teaching our group how to cook some of her delicious food. Yay for us!

For those of you not familiar with Pakistani cooking, it varies in different regions. The style we will be learning is very similar to Indian food, and it is influenced by Faiza's Muslim roots.

Any meat used will be halal. This is a set of rules governing food...especially meat. Some aspects of it are very similar to Kosher for those of you familiar with those laws. Muslims are taught through the Qu'ran that all animals should be treated with respect and well cared for. The goal is to slaughter the animal, limiting the amount of pain the animal will endure. Halal meat must be killed humanely, must not have been fed an unnatural diet or animal by-products, and it must not have been a carnivore or raptor. Food may not contain blood, so it must be cooked thoroughly.

She will teach us at least 3 recipes.  She will also be bringing some Henna to teach us how it is used to create amazing body art.  She and I will go shopping ahead of time for the ingredients.  So I don't end up buying way too much food, and so people don't RSVP and then not show up, I have set up a Paypal option for this event.  The scope of the event has grown somewhat.  Originally Faiza's idea was to make it strictly vegetarian since she knows I am vegetarian.  However, I have told her that we should offer meat options for the carnivores out there.  Also, I want to offer a spice care package for everyone who attends.  This will give you a sampling of all of the spices we use without you having to go out and spend a ton of money buying full quantities of all of them.  This way you will go home with everything you need to start putting your new Pakistani cooking skills to good use.  I will not make any money from this event.  The balance of the amount collected after paying for all of the food will be used to purchase a gift card for Faiza to say "Thank You!"  She did not ask for any compensation for this event, but I think this is the courteous thing to do.  I will bring the receipts for the groceries and gift card to the event.   :-)

I don't know about you, but I'm very excited!  Her food is really...REALLY good!  :-)

That was a wonderful night: great cooking experience, tasty food and beautiful dance. Thanks Chefs for the best Pakistani food and adopting me in your family. Thanks Tom and others for cleaning up the "aftermath". Thanks everyone else for good team work and interesting conversations. Finally, thanks Jennifer for hosting this event and I will give you a Wok as a gift whenever I see you next time.

Ok...We also need a couple of punch bowls for drinks I want to make. I'm also setting up a spice tasting station, so if any of you have some interesting spices you would like to bring, feel free.

    September 14, 2013

Just the punch bowl and ladle is good. Mary is bringing cups, I think. I've been plumping lentils and chickpeas since 6am. :-)

I'm sorry. My daughter has the stomach flu and I'm not going to make it. It's not fair to expose others. I changed my RSVP. I'll hope to see lots of good pics and hear about the food!!

I am so excited about this cooking class. I've been telling my friends about it all week!

      September 13, 2013

  • Jennifer B.

A few appliances that will make life easier if you have one: A couple of those electric burners you can plug in, a Vitamix or food processor, a grinder to fresh grind our seeds. If we have a few of these extra goodies, we can possibly set up multiple stations to have smaller groups working on various recipes since all 30 of us aren't going to fit in the kitchen at once. Also, some folding tables may be nice.

    September 12, 2013

    • Tom P.

Several people can work at our breakfast room table and a few people can work around the counters. I have the dining room set up for eating and one outside table that can be used for prep and later for eating. We have a number of extra chairs, but not enough for everyone at one time. So if some of you can bring a camp chair we won't have to play musical chairs.

      September 13, 2013

Tom, Faiza wants to know if she can show up between 3 and 3:30.

My camera got sick and went to the shop. Best Buy couldn't fix it and offered me a ridiculous "comparable" model. I fought the law...and I WON!!! Instead of getting the dinky Kodak they offered, I am getting a Sony - DSC-HX300! :-) I should have it for this event, so get yourselves pretty! :-)

    September 13, 2013

  • Jennifer B.

Ok, gang. I updated the RSVP's. There are currently 8 spots open. Be sure that if you are planning to bring someone that you update your RSVP number and pay for the appropriate number of spots. If I have removed you by mistake, please let me know, and I will correct it. Thanks! I'm hungry...can't wait! :-)

This is a kid friendly event, by the way. Feel free to rsvp with the family.

    September 12, 2013

  • Jennifer B.

Ok...I'm still not getting much of a response. When I get home I will be removing the RSVPs for anyone who hasn't paid or contacted me. I will then set the site so you have to pay before RSVPing. I'm sorry, but it is not fair to not get Tom accurate RSVP info when he is being gracious enough to share his home with us. Thank you all for understanding.

FYI: Those of you who never used PayPal before: you don't need a PayPal account to use it. You can do a one-time transaction without actually establishing an account. I just did it (for the first time), and it was easy.

    September 11, 2013

  • Jennifer B.

I still have relatively few people who have made the PayPal payment. People from the wait list may go ahead and pay. As you do so I will shift people who have not paid off the "yes" list and put you in their place.

    September 11, 2013

    • nhinguyen

I don't have PayPal account and I will bring cash on Saturday. From your message, you will move me out of the "yes" list since i haven't pay yet. Please let me know whether you move me out of that list then. Thanks.

    September 9, 2013

  • Jennifer B.

Tom has agreed to let more people into this event, but he would like everyone to pay ahead of time so we have an accurate head count....and I agree. You do not need to have a PayPal account to pay on the PayPal link. You can pay with a debit or credit card. Please go on and pay as soon as possible so I can give Tom the final number. Thanks!

    September 9, 2013

  • Jennifer B.

Hey guys! I'm sure Tom doesn't have enough seating for everyone. Please feel free to bring some camp chairs or folding chairs just in case we need them. Also, feel free to bring coolers and drinks. You can bring and share adult beverages at this event as long as you drink responsibly.

    September 8, 2013

  • Mary

I bought enough paper plates and napkins as well as plastic cups and utinsels for everyone

    September 8, 2013

    • Jennifer B.

You're awesome, Mary! That's one thing off my list.

      1 · September 8, 2013

I need EVERYONE who has not confirmed with me that they are actually going to this event to confirm your reservation in the next couple of days. I have multiple people that really want to go to this, and if some people who have RSVP'd "yes" can't really go, I would like to open their spots to those members. Thank you!

    September 8, 2013

  • Linda M.

I just made a payment for Claire and I. Remember, she's just there as an observer and will probably only eat bread and rice! I of course will try some of everything we make!

Thank you for putting this together.

    Hi Jennifer,

I know I am on the waiting list and I wanted to make sure I was able to put +1 for that waiting list (as I will be bringing one other person if we make it off the list).

Crossing fingers and let me know if people do not pay or cancel...we would love to go for this event (great idea by the way)

Actually I do need to chip in as my family will be there too. Certainly my wife and some number of the three kids that currently claim Chez Tom as home. So I've changed my RSVP to plus two.

Thanks to Faiza, I discovered Chana Masala today. It is a spectacular spice blend with Cumin, Black Pepper, Red Chili, Clove, Brown and Green Cardamom, Cinnamon, Garlic, & Ginger. I cooked some potato, onion, and chickpeas with a little cilantro, and a lot of the Chana Masala. It was great! (and vegan) Even my meat and potatoes husband loved it and ate a huge bowl full!

I touched base with Faiza today. She is very excited. Tom, she said your place will work fine. You can get as authentic with this event as you like. She will be bringing some Pakistani music, and I'm going to Harwin Street to get a salwar. I've been wanting to go to Harwin for some new Kurtis anyway. :-)

Jennifer, did you get my email?

    August 16, 2013

Yes. I replied as soon as you sent it. I asked how big your kitchen is so I can let Faiza know.

      August 16, 2013

    • Tom P.

      I see it now. Thanks

      August 17, 2013

  • Mary

Jennifer, do you need any help with this? Should I bring paper plates, cups, etc.? Are there any kitchen utinsels or small appliances I can bring?

    August 16, 2013

    • Mary

No, Jimmy’s not coming. Thanks for asking. As you can imagine, Bay City is not known for its culinary variety; so when we go to Houston, I want to go to eat Thai, Indian, etc. Jimmy, on the other hand, wants to go to IHOP. So, no, he’s not coming.

I’m embarrassed to say this being half Japanese and all, but I don’t own a rice cooker. I don’t even remember what happened to mine. I cook my rice on the stove now. I own a food processor, a VitaMix blender, a K-cup coffee machine as well as a coffee press, and other miscellaneous stuff, so if you need any of those sorts of things...

I can also make rice here at home (I have Basmati) and bring it to the event, too. I’ll bring the paper plates, cups, napkins, and plastic-ware. Let me know if you want me to make rice.

      August 16, 2013

    • Jennifer B.

I'll bring rice cookers. Jimmy and Josh should go bowling! :-) See you there!

      1 · August 16, 2013

By the way. I think these cooking nights might make for a fun series. I could teach a Filipino class since I lived with a Filipino family. Any other talented cooks out there?

    August 16, 2013

  • Mary

If it's about food, I am so there.

    August 16, 2013

Interested, but would like to keep the location closer to the west site or at least around HWY8 if possible.

    August 14, 2013

Hi Jen - Here is my situation: would love to join as I love this type of food, I would not mind even hosting in the future, but I have a very sick dog and committing 100% to anything at the moment is just not an option. All I can do is sign up for it and hope I can participate. If that is an option, please let me know. Same applies to this weekend downtown meetup. By all means I'm planning on going +1 unless he is sick. It is very difficult to leave him when he is experiencing seizures, etc. By the way, I'm scheduled to do SurLaTable cooking class next week-those are expensive though! I searched cooking classes and only came across 3 places in Houston (all $70+), so glad you have the connection to find this option for us. Does she do private events too or is this event more as a favor to you? Thank you,

      August 15, 2013

    • Jennifer B.

I think she would consider private lessons. No problem...go ahead and RSVP. Just keep me updated. We will be doing more low-cost classes in the future.

      August 15, 2013

  • Anna Tobias K.

My schedule is too unpredictable so I better not commit.
