Night Hike Terry Hershey Park (5 miles)

  • to
  • Terry Hershey Park (South Dairy Ashford)

1001 South Dairy Ashford Drive, Houston, TX (map)

    29.760908 -95.605865

  • Meet in the empty parking lot on the south side of the Bayou. We will pretty much be the only ones in the parking lot.
  • We have to get as many hikes in as possible before Zion and Havasupai!  I'm going through night hike withdrawals, so here we go!

These hikes are great for first timers and kids.  They are not as long, hot, or challenging as some of the other hikes we do.  They are also a little slower pace.  They are a good way to test your fitness level without killing yourself.  Kids love the creepy night-time factor.  Do not be nervous if you are first timer with this can walk up to anyone and they will start a conversation with you.  We are all very outgoing and friendly.

We will start out at the Dairy Ashford parking lot near the center of the trail. From there we will stay on the dirt trails headed east and back...finishing up back at Dairy Ashford.  We will be using the narrow dirt trails.  Once we get to the turnaround point, you can choose to cross the bayou and take the sidewalks back to the parking lot.  Most of us like to stay on the dirt though.  :-)

    Supply List:
headlamp, snack, water, sense of adventure. I recommend hiking boots for this hike in case it is slick, but tennis shoes will get you by.
If you are afraid of the dark you are welcome to bring a rosary and a woobie. :-)

Dogs are welcome, but they must be kept on a leash at all times and must be friendly.  I am a dog fanatic, but there are NO exceptions to this rule.  We have members that are nervous around dogs.  If you take your dog off the leash, you will be asked to leave the event.  Thank you for being sensitive to others' feelings on this.

We'll plan to eat something afterward at Jason's Deli:   14604 Memorial Dr. 77079

Please leave home a little early to be at the trailhead on time, and please LOOK AT THE MAP before you leave so you know where you are going.  :-)

Ok. I am going to reschedule for Monday night. Who would like to lead?

I will let majority rule on this one. It will be below freezing tonight. These trails have some little ups and downs in them, and if they are moist, they will be frozen. Do we want to have the hike tonight anyway or reschedule this hike for Sunday during the day or Monday evening (both days should have good weather and higher temps). I will not be able to attend those days, but there are plenty of you capable of leading this hike. Post your comments to let me know. Also, if you would like to lead, let me know. Thanks!

I think rescheduling is a good idea with the weather uncertainty.

Sunday or Monday does sound good.

Do you think I can get by without a headlamp?

I am planning on attending however, since I have two races coming up, if it rains I will not take the chance. Sorry I have to be a fair weather hiker. I will also bring my dog and have read the rules.
