Backpacking 201 / Camp / Night Hike Brazos Bend!!!

This may be the coolest Brazos Bend thing we've done! I have reserved space for 16 people in the Equine Primitive Camp Site in the very back section of Brazos Bend. We will meet at Brazos Bend's 40 Acre Lake parking lot at 1pm. We will have a nice stroll around the lake and get great looks at big gators. I know many of these alligators' habits, so we should get up close and personal with at least 2 of them at that time of day. :-)

All of the following photos were taken by me at various visits to Brazos Bend.  To see more photos, go to www.flickr.com/photos/cooljennpics/sets

From there we will drive to the lot closest to the forest trails. We will gear up and begin our hike to the Equine Camp. It will be a nice quiet hike with only the birds talking. Very few people hike these trails. Once we make camp, we can go down to the Brazos River Beach which is very close by. This is a very unique sandy river beach with a sand cliff on the far side. It's cool to sit and relax on or explore a little bit.

When it starts to get dark, we will have a night hike which will allow you to have some unique experiences with the nocturnal wildlife in the park. There are no alligators where we will be camping, so don't worry about that. Critters you will get to see are armadillos (a ton of them!), raccoons, possums, deer, wild hogs (we will discuss safety ahead of time), and possibly a bobcat, etc.

We will return from our night hike and enjoy a well-deserved campfire. :-) The next morning you can choose to sleep in a little before hiking out of camp. From there you can go take a shower at the shelter facilities, get changed, and come with us to the Hindu Holi Mela (Festival of Colors) which is a free and incredibly fun event in nearby Rosenberg. Or, you can enjoy the park a little longer.

See you there!

Garage sale people...You will still be able to come out. We will be handing out around 40 acre lake for about an hour before we start the hike into the campground.

    March 22, 2014

    • Jennifer B.

      Hanging out...hate auto correct.

      March 22, 2014

Can't make it today. Still in line at REI garage sale. Got plans this afternoon. Wish this rain would come during week instead of weekends.

    March 22, 2014

  • Kyle S.

This will be my first meet with the group, looking forward to meeting everyone!

    March 22, 2014

There will be some rain. I don't want to be the only one that shows up. Who is still in?

    March 22, 2014

    • Jennifer B.

The Houston REI garage store is happening today (Saturday, 3/22). This would be a good chance to pick up any last-minute camping gear for this trip. :)

    March 22, 2014

  • Jennifer B.

I already know I will probably end up working longer than I hope tomorrow. Let's push the meeting time to 2pm just in case. We will meet at the pier at 40 Acre Lake. See you then!

    March 21, 2014

  • Rob

I have an early Sunday meeting and won't be able to camp but will make the hike at least =)

    March 22, 2014

  • David

Is there a cost to attend? How about food? May we bring bikes?

    March 11, 2014

    • Jennifer B.

If you are staying at my site, just bring some drinks and share. :-) You will need to bring your food, and you may bring your bike. If you are bringing drinks, we can drive through the back gate and stash them in coolers near the campsite.

      March 11, 2014

    • Stacey

I'm thinking about bringing my mountain bike too. It would be nice if there are other bikers that come along.

      March 21, 2014

  • Stacey

Does anybody want to carpool? I live near the corner of I-10/610 West Loop. I can drive or help out with gas.

    March 21, 2014

  • Jennifer B.

I have room for 14 additional people between my two sites. We will need someone to reserve an additional site for the rest. Who wants to be on my sites? Please only post under this thread so I can keep track. Thanks!

    March 18, 2014

    • Jennifer B.

Ok...You are all in. A family asked if they can all be on my site. You are welcome to attend the event, but you'll need to get your own site. It's only $12. Sorry, but I can't find the email you sent me.

      March 21, 2014

    • Stacey

      I am in! Thanks!

      March 21, 2014

  • Jennifer B.

If you are on my site, don't worry about paying me back...just bring some firewood or extra beverages. :-) We'll want plenty of firewood for our post-hike campfire.

We want to come! The site only let's me put 2 guests... Am I allowed to bring my 4 boys? We will only occupy one tent... I'm new to this (though we have done some camping before) so would appreciate any advice...

    March 20, 2014

    • Jennifer B.

Go ahead and reserve your own site, and you can certainly bring your boys (as long as they are well behaved). Make sure you reserve in the equine campground.

I'm so sorry to have to back out. I've come down with something and probably shouldn't share my germs or make it worse by sleeping outside :-/ I'm disappointed.

    March 20, 2014

  • Jennifer B.

Holi Festival has been moved back a week, so we have some extra time on Sunday. I thought I'd let us sleep in a little on Sunday before hiking out of our camp area. Then we can do an alligator trails hike to check out the baby waterfowl that should be starting to hatch and possible catch turtles mating. Maybe we can bring some eggs, tortillas, etc to make a good camp breakfast before the hike out. What do you think?

    2 · March 20, 2014

  • Jennifer B.

If you have a heavy duty hiking stick, bring it. I will tell you why when you get to camp. It's a surprise. :-) Also, feel free to bring some camp games like Taboo or something.

Are there still available spaces? Is there a list of recommended gear?

    March 19, 2014

    • Jennifer B.

daypack, water, food, tent, sleeping bag, pad, headlamp, firewood...those are the most important items.

      1 · March 20, 2014

  • Jennifer B.

If you do not want to backpack in, you don't have to. There is a back gate to the park that opens to our campground. You can drop your gear and pitch your tents...then you can drive back to meet up with us backpackers for the hike in.

I wish! Cant wait till next month when I have Sat and Sunday off instead of Friday Saturday!

    March 13, 2014

I'd love to join in but I have a show for that night.
