Beginner's Guide to Joomla and Joomla 3.0 walk-through with Justin Link

This beginners meetup will walk you through the newly released Joomla! 3.0 core platform, to show you how Joomla! works, what features you should pay attention to and utilize, and the power Joomla has to scale and organize websites to any size, shape, or form.

The meetup will focus a lot of attention on understanding the fundamentals and basics of Joomla! so that you leave feeling like you can jump in and do more with Joomla!.

Many people say they feel like Joomla! has a bit of a learning curve and don't understand some of the features (like the menu system and linking modules and articles together). But after Justin explains WHY Joomla! is built the way it is, they folks realize the extreme power that it creates to build incredibly customized websites and pages exactly the way they want them!

Key topics:

  • Backend walk-through of basic configurations and features.
  • New features and changes in Joomla 3.0 compared to previous versions.
  • How to setup a page, blog format, and overview of other functionalities.
  • How to fully utilize the Joomla! menus and why they're incredibly useful and powerful when used the way they were built and inteded to be used.
  • An overview of setting up module positioning for pages and linking them to menus.
  • A few key extensions you may want for changing editors, backing up your website, and other functionality to extend your Joomla! website beyond the core.

As many topics will be covered as time allows.

Justin is a Web Designer who has been working with Joomla! since nearly it's beginning. He's built websites large and small with Joomla, fully grasping it's potential to build websites of any scale and in multiple ways.

Any location logistics will be emailed to those that RSVP yes as we get closer to the date.

This meetup is no charge and focused on beginners, yet, all are welcome. Feel free to bring a snack to share with the group!

See you on June 12th!

Thanks for the walk-through Justin. I'm glad you could handle all our interruptions and questions. It's something I like about our group: it's interactive, and we are open to others sharing what they know about the topic at hand.

In your talk, I think it would have been helpful to have more of relating what we change at the Joomla back end, with how it affects/what we see at the front end.

Was fun seeing some of the stuff in the back end of 3.0. What ideally appreciate about these meetings is the little tidbits of super useful info I get from our very experienced members. Thank you

Any information about parking and fees from Berkeley?

    June 12, 2013

    • Jennifer G.

hi michelle, maybe you were on the waiting list and didn't get the info...Hello those who RSVPed "Yes" AND those on the waiting list,

We're looking forward to a fun and informative meetup tomorrow night and to seeing you all.

These are the parking logistics for the event as stated by the coordinator at NextSpace San Jose:

"Safeway will validate for up to 2 hours if you buy something on your way out. There is also an open surface lot just south of Safeway (entry on 3rd street) that is flat rate-usually $5 but I have seen it at $7 or $10 depending on what is going on downtown."

If you find that you cannot attend, please change your RSVP to NO so that those on the waiting list can come.

I'm sending this to both those RSVP'd and those on the waiting list so that IF those on the waiting list end up on the RSVP Yes list, that they have these logistics.

We are intending to have light snacks at this meetup.

I thought I would be able to attend but I tested the location by going to the San Jose Library then returning home. My GPS navigation took me a major circle - Missing 87 North fork from San Fernando and it daylight. Sorry late change in my RSVP.

Regret I can't attend, although I would love to. I'm already enrolled in a class on Social Media Marketing on that night. (More here if you are interested: http://events.r20.constantcontact.com/register/event?oeidk=a07e7drs3h58c9780bc)

I was thinking it would be good to present some content for Joomla beginners and intermediates. And I'm about to start my first Joomla 3.0 website. How timely Justin - thanks!
