Annual Holiday Joomla! Extension Potluck &/or JWC Highlights

Greetings Fellow Joomla! Folks!

It is already almost December again. Which means it's time for our end of the year Extension Potluck! (These will only be annually from now on. So, next extension potluck December 2013.)

What is an Extension Potluck?

Each of us will bring a dish or item of food to share with the group.

Each of us will bring a Joomla! extension to share. We will each have only about 10-15 minutes to share a mini-presentation on an extension you like using and think the group would too. Note: it must be a 2.5 or 3.x extension - no more 1.5 demo's for extensions please.

Alternatively, if those who attended the Joomla! World Conference would rather share some of the highlights of the Conference instead of an extension, that is cool too. I know I'd like to share some stuff and perhaps others would too.

Please enter your name, food dish and extension (or JWC) into the Google spreadsheet for the Extension Potluck so that we can all plan accordingly.

This event will be held at the NextSpace Union Square in San Francisco. It is upstairs from the BART Station. You can BART in, park at a BART and take BART, ride a bike or drive in and park. Here's what NextSpace says about getting there:

Getting Here
1) Take public transportation? Easy. We’re located right above the Powell Street BART and Muni station.
2) Need to park your car? Check out the Yerba Buena Parking Garage that’s only a block away: http://www.fifthandmission.com/home.htm (up to $32/24hours). Or want a better rate for a longer walk? Check out this garage at Turk and Taylor for only $10/day with in and out privileges http://www.sfparkinggarage.com/rates.
3) Going green and riding a bike? There’s no bike parking in the building but you can definitely lock your bike right outside the front door near the lobby and you’re all set!

There are other garages around as well says James...

This event is no charge. We will supply paper products.

This will be a great way to close 2012 after another great year working with Joomla! and each other.

Looking forward to seeing you there!!

Happy Holidays,

Jenn & James

Actually, I had ready figured out the futility in trying to explain a product like virtuemart in 10 minutes so have opted to do that perhaps at another time. I'm going to discuss another component that I've used a number of times called ExtendedReg. Not having been to a meeting before, I'm hoping this has not been a topic of discussion before. Can someone tell me quickly what tools would be available to show these products. Is there a computer with Internet access or will we just be doing a standup talk with verbal descriptions. Should I bring a laptop or just my iPad, what's typically done?

Ric - great extension to show! A full screen and projector is available and use your computer or another computer is there.

      Thanks!

I'd love to see someone give us an introduction to VirtueMart. I hear so many gripes about it yet it is the third most popular eCommerce package among the "top 1 million Alexa sites" in 2011. I have developed ecommerce websites using a few other eCommerce packages, but none for Joomla yet.

    December 5, 2012

    • Carol M.

I see. Thanks for the VirtueMart conversation offer Emmanuel. I actually don't know what Alexa is, I just found the report when trying to figure out what eCommerce package would be best to learn for Joomla, including something standalone if there was nothing good for Joomla. If you like Hikashop I'd like to learn about that too. Unfortunately, I seem to have too much other work and I might miss the extension potluck after all ... we'll see.

Shopping Carts - Note that we do not really have much time to show large Components like VirtueMart, just a simple overview. I suggest though that Emmanuel show an overview of Hikashop like he suggested, which is a much better system. A few of us can show basics on VirtueMart, but to be honest it is really a component that has had major 2.5 issues for most of the year... so lets give simple overviews on these for this purpose and revisit this for a main Meetup. Hope overview works good Carol.

I'm looking forward to meeting all of you for the first time. I will attempt to bring a casserole of some type. That will depend on my wife I guess. I have two modules I have been working a lot with lately, one is VirtueMart and the other is JomRes. I can speak about either one if you have a preference. As you may or may not know, VirtueMart is a shopping cart application and JomRes is a rental application i.e. room rental, hotel rental, car rental, Yatch and RV rental, etc.

Hello Ric, I look forward to meeting you. My preference is for VirtueMart, if you must choose ahead of time so you can prepare. I have created websites using a few other eCommerce packages, but no eCommerce for Joomla yet since I don't know how.

Updated the spreadsheet. Advanced Module Manager or Modules Anywhere, which ever the group wants to see.

Hi guys. My company uses Joomla and wanted someons to get familar with it to manage and control our website. However, I know nothing about Joomla. What I am looking for is a quick rundown on how it works. It seems like this meeting will be more of a sharing rather than tutorial session. Am I right? If not, I would love to join the group on this day. Anyone, please let me know your thoughts and let me know if you think this would be benefical for me to come. Once I find out if this is something that is worthwhile, I will let you know what I will be bring. Thanks guys.

Meetup cut off the link but you can find it with Google.

it links to joomlashack university - that is one way to do it for sure - thanks page. the other thing jonathan is that while yes, this meetup is more of a sharing that a tutorial session, it still would be very beneficial to come to. joomla in and of itself is fantastic. the extensions that extend joomla's functionality are also fantastic. some of them are very basic and some are more complex. i would say that almost every joomla deployment has at least 1 extension that it uses. so knowing them and jumping both feet in is great. i think you would get something out of it.
