RE: [webdesign-490] Joomla3 Templates *

It’s unlikely you will see v3 in the iPage control panel until it goes LTR-stable. That won’t be until Joomla v3.5 which about a year away.

FTR, I have never used the built in script installer at any host I have ever been on. I upload the archive and use the host’s file manager to extract it on the site. Jon is correct that it’s much faster, but I have seen hosts that don’t have the ability to unzip it in place which means that it would have to be extracted locally and manually FTP’d; very time consuming and clumsy. I don’t know what iPage offers.

Again, there is no real advantage to go to J3.x right now. the only real advantage it has over v2.5 is that Twitter Bootstrap framework which allows the admin side to be mobile friendly. J2.5 has responsive templates available that make the front-end virtually indistinguishable. To be honest, I have little need to do anything administratively while I’m on the fly. Since most extensions aren’t yet using that framework it’s still kind of pointless unless you want to write an article on your iPhone…..;)

Thank you.  Yes, I have a file manager and I have installed 2.5 throught the scripts install but 2.5 is the only version that is indicated in the iPage Control Panel.  I will wait until that option becomes available in the Control Panel because that will indicate to me that they have a  3.something JOOMLA version available.  I thing I will wait until the first 3.0 stable release is available.

You don’t need to install 2.5 first…

And be sure you have PHP 5.3 enabled

You should have a File Manager in your CP.

Use that to upload the Joomla 3 package.

Then select and choose extract… It is so much faster…

=Crucial=  ( Then edit the .htaccess to enable PHP 5.3 )

Here’s Hostgators instructions ( https://support.hostgator.com/articles/hosting-guide/hardware-software/php-5-3 )

You’ll probably have to rename the current .htaccess and rename the Joomla htaccess.txt to .htaccess then add the PHP 5.3 support

Create your SQL table then go to your site and install…

Correct, you can install the 2.5 that is probably what is in your webhost’s control panel, then upgrade to the STS v3.02 by changing the settings in your “Joomla Update” component to “short term release”. However, be extra sure you want to do this. that is not the current, stable Joomla release. If it for a dev site have at it, but it’s not recommended to use v3.x for production sites yet.

Alternatively, you can install Joomla the old fashioned way by downloading the install archive from Joomla.org then FTP-ing all the files to your web space and running the installer…..;)

There is an upgrade feature in Joomla that will allow you to upgrade from 2.5 to 3.0.  Instructions are in the upgrade section of the FAQ http://docs.joomla.org/Joomla_3.0_FAQ .  If your CP isn't setup with a link for the install, either install manually or upgrade.

Now that I am starting two new domains and two new hosts…..how do you install JOOMLA 3.0 thru the host control panel?  I only see 2.5 version as a CMS install option.
