How To Freelance

Going off on your own is scary. Freelance work might seem daunting, especially when it comes to working with your own clients! Questions such as "What do I do?", "What Should I Say?" and "How much should I charge?" probably are big questions that come to mind first.

A little over two years ago, I started going freelance. I was totally green, and made a few mistakes along the way. Fast forward to now, and I have a small but profitable business, the Detroit Web Developers. This success obviously didn't happen overnight, and took countless hours of smart work and trial and errors.

I'd Like To Show You How To Go Freelance

In this meetup, we'll start with a quick overview of what it means to go freelance, and why it's not for everybody. It's a rough job, but if you think you're up to the challenge, come to this meetup!

We'll also take a look at how to deal with clients. What you need to consider, things you need to know, managing your client's expectations, and how to properly communicate.

Once you have secured your first job, we'll go into what you need to know to go freelance seriously, and why you shouldn't quit your day job immediately (I still put in a 40+ hour week at the Zoo). We'll go over time and project management as well as the legal requirements of being a freelancer.

Finally, you don't have to freelance alone. We'll touch on sub-contracting work out to make your life easier and more manageable.

Join us on August 26, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. at the Detroit Zoo, Ford Education Center Conference Room if you're interested in learning what it takes to go freelance!

Great, very informative. By the way, Son, did you do the presentation in PowerPoint, or did you use some other program? It seemed very smooth.

Also, what are you guys doing about distance learning?

Hope we get a list of items to consider when contracting with our first client. How about a handout of a relevant contract. :-)

One more question everyone: can someone take pictures tonight? I'll supply the camera. Need to send in to the Joomla Community Magazine this month.

Where are the directions you claimed that you would send out yesterday? What time do you want everyone to be there? I probably won't be eating pizza because I have blood work being done next week and I have to watch what I eat.

About the Pizza dinner: I will pick up Pizza and Pop for all attendees. If you can swing it, please donate $5 for the food, but if not, don't worry about it. I'll pick it up -- Can someone please bring paper plates, napkins and cups?

Please have some veg options for the pizza, maybe even whole wheat crust & low fat cheese, if available.
The pizza place should provide napkins.

I'm going with just cheese since you and I don't eat pork, if that's ok with you. Planning on just getting the Little Cesar's $5 pizzas.

Just a question, but would there be any takers for Pizza and Pop at next week's meetup ($5 contibution at the meetup)? I'm thinking just simple stuff - cheese pizzas and peperoni. If there's 4 or more who are willing to commit, we'll do it. I'd probably need someone to step up to pick up the pizza (just the Little Cesar's $5 ones) and someone else to pick up pop. Anyone wish to discuss?
