One of the most important parts of website creation is the development process. Many site owners will test and develop new themes and extensions directly on the the live website (one that is publicly viewable), which is a huge no-no in any situation!
Most of the time, everything goes as planned, but if it doesn't... well, a lot of bad things can happen! Site crashes, Errors and other sleep-loss and hair-pulling events may ensue!
Your Joomla User Group Detroit has decided to hold our very first webinar! As it may be difficult for many of you to drive to Downtown Detroit for a regular meetup, we are piloting this webinar as an alternate way for everyone to get together for a user group meeting.
For those of you who have never attended a webinar before, on the day and time of the event, you will want to come back to this page and click the "Webinar Link". You will be then taken into the meeting where the presenter is broadcasting their desktop to everyone.
If you have a headset and mic, or your laptop/desktop has a mic built in, you can use your computer's audio to communicate and ask questions. Alternately, you can also use the phone number to call into the webinar, and enter the access code.
The webinar will be in an "open discussion format" meaning all can talk and contribute/comment/ask a question at any time. You will have the option to mute your mic if you are using an attached or built in microphone on your computer. For callers using the phone number, you will be able to mute your mic only if your phone supports muting.
What we will be doing:
We will be creating a local development environment (meaning on your computer), and pulling a copy of a live website down to the development site. In simple terms, we will create an exact copy of a live production website on a local machine for development.
The benefits, needless to say, are huge. You can install and test extensions and themes without worry that you're going to break the production website.
A development environment will also allow you to create a brand new website from scratch and then upload to a production server when complete! We'll also be covering how to do this too.
Copying a production website to your development environment
1. Introduction and setup to your local development environment
2. Generating a copy of your production website
3. Installing the copy to your local development (dev) environment
4. Configuration of the dev environment
Then we'll create a brand new site on development, and upload to production
1. Installing a fresh copy of Joomla 2.5.7 on the dev environment
2. Installing theme and extensions (mimicking a real development process)
3. Uploading to production.
We will be using a Windows 7 Computer to setup the development environment. At this time, Son Koral does not own a Mac to run a mac tutorial (boo!), but if he gets one soon, we will do this webinar again with a Mac... Sorry Mac users - or if you have a Mac, please do contribute if you know how to set up a local environment!
This webinar is held IN ADDITION TO our local meetups at the Quicken Loans building. We are actively searching for a new (free) place to meet that is easier for people to get to.
Please let us know if you have or know of a place we can meet. We are also standardizing our meetups to the first Wednesday of the month.
*** Please note: We will meet on Jan 9 (Still in the works) to accomodate for the New Years holiday ***
