Signal Peak Hike and Picnic Lunchin Pinos Altos NM

Signal Peak

The Pinos Altos Range is the southernmost mountain range of the Gila Wilderness, the largest wilderness in New Mexico. Although this hike does not enter the wilderness area, great views of the wilderness greet hikers from the trail and the summit. Initially the trail passes through thick stands of Douglas-fir on the moister north slopes of the mountain. As it climbs, it curves around onto the sunnier, drier, south-facing slopes of the peak and ponderosa pine becomes more common. While most of the hike travels through dense forest, regular breaks in the trees give increasingly dramatic views, especially to the south and southwest. From the summit, with its fire lookout tower, you can see 360 degrees. To the east, north, and west lie the endless mountain ranges of the 3.3 million-acre Gila National Forest. To the south and southwest, desert basin and range country stretches far into Arizona and Mexico.

GPS track: http://www.gpsies.com/map.do?fileId=abgiyxshhagpnhid This isn't the distance we walked, but the distance from the cars to the farthest we were, and back. I believe only Manos walked this much. Working on the last set of photos from the other camera...

Group really took the changes in stride and it was a great time both in terms if the fellow hikers, watching the day's events and the weather.

Hey everyone. The map (above) to Kmart was a little off, so I just updated it. Take I-25 North to Hwy-70 East and stay in the far right lane of the offramp. Pull into the Kmart parking lot on your right.

@Charlie: Sorry to hear you can't make it! It's going to be quite hot in ELP this weekend... but probably doing the Tin Mines (you can walk inside--bring a flashlight) and North Mount Franklin coming up from the east side would be a decent day hike.

To make it easier, everyone should pack their lunches and if you want to bring items to share that's fine but not necessary. I look forward to seeing you all. Plan is to meet at 7 at the Kmart in main to depart for Pinos Altos by 715 at the latest. If your plans change, just post a comment or send me a message. Thanks.

If you decide to do something shorter that day, the Pine Tree Trail is about 1/2 that length and still scenic. Access is from Aguirre Springs Campground area on the other (east) side of the Organs. Have fun!

Yes, it's very scenic (to me, anyway). See directions here: http://www.meetup.com/hiking-261/events/58971842/?a=ea1_grp&rv=ea1

can you give me directions to the trail head? that might be the best bet for our first hike in the Organs. Again, thanks. J

I just read about that one. Would you recommend it? is it pretty? my friends and I will be coming off of Cinco de mayo celebrations in Mesilla so while we'd like to have a pretty hike, we may be sweating out the results of too much nocturanl partying the night before. J

Have you hiked the Baylor Pass Trail? Starting from the west side would be a 7-8 mi. round-trip.

It takes about 10 minutes to get the the trail head for Signal Peak Hike #742. The hike is fairly shadded throughout. Note that it is ranked as difficult and information is available on the original posting for the meetup. For those worried about time, Trish is probably smart to allow extra time.

    General Information
    Directions:
Travel north from Silver City on State Highway 15 for approximately 14 miles. The trailhead is located on the west side of the road and is identified by a sign HOWEVER the actual trail is to the EAST (across the highway). Look for the trail immediately southeast of the cattleguard on highway 15, across the road from parking area. This is trail #742

I left my computer at the office. I'll post a link for directions to the trailhead for anyone interested. I estimated 2.5 hrs driving each way (I know on line it says 2 hrs but it takes me longer) plus a couple hrs hiking since it's a 5 mile hike plus lunch (1 hr?).

I'm guessing more like 5-6pm, but I probably shouldn't contradict the host because she may kick my #$&! :)

I'll send details and route info tomorrow when I'm on my computer. So far I'm thinking we'll return to Las Cruces by about 3 pm.
