Meteor.js

  • April 23, 2013 · 6:00 PM

Last month we had a lighting talks on variety of topics.  This month Jim Hall will dive into Meteor.js

Jim will talk about the rationale the creators had in creating it, which reflects on its strengths, as well as some of the drawbacks.  Its still being developed so there are gaps. We'll touch on what these gaps are and which will be addressed (that we know of).

After all that, we'll get into how it actually works, go through the api and illustrate what sort of patterns it promotes.

6:00 - begin arriving and socialize

6:30 - presentation begins

Space, food and refreshments will be provided by Enova Financial.

This may be difficult given the wifi connection, but If we are going to show code in an editor for a majority of the presentation it would be really nice to have a screen sharing application for people in the back of the room to connect with.

One of the Enova people has been talking about setting up a remote screen. I keep forgetting about though. I don't suppose you'd like to lead this effort?

I can work with your contact if you'd like. I was hoping to use a simple screen sharing app like join.me to see if that is sufficient.

Be nice to cover Derby too. I think we can forget about Mojito. Good pre-read for those wanting to know more about Meteor versus Derby: http://blog.derbyjs.com/2012/04/14/our-take-on-derby-vs-meteor/

Sounds interesting. Has anyone used it enough to cover the topic in a few months?

I would maybe in a few months really enjoy talking about YUI3. Although a deep dive could get very deep. It would be nice to talk about the module system, the event system, effects, the object oriented programming module, the array module (think underscore), the base class, the attribute class, then widgets, models, views, and full page apps (with routing). You see how there are a lot of topics there. The trick would have to be to treat each section as a lightning talk. Afterwards, I would like to open it up to comparisons with other Frameworks and see what people feel are differences: benefits and trade offs. Where other frameworks are better or worse.

I would like to use the presentation and it's audience to attempt to figure out where it is best to use and where something else is great to use. We could also open the questions up into the YUI irc channel, where it's designers are always answering questions.

Great - keep me updated on your readiness, and we'll see how the schedule looks

I may be in the minority here, but wouldn't it make the most sense to do a deep dive on one that HAD been covered by a lightning talk? A 10-minute talk isn't exactly enough time to thoroughly cover something as expansive as Backbone, CanJS, or even jQuery (though not a framework itself), really. Maybe take a vote on one of the lightning talk topics and then deep dive on that?

That said, I'd love to do an entire session on Backbone, but I'll be out of town on this date. Enjoy, all!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
