Discussion: Effective Javascript by David Herman

Let's take another guided tour into the intricacies of Javascript by reading David Herman's new book "Effective Javascript". This book will help us evolve our Javascript knowledge further by reviewing topics such as prototypes, JS data structures, concurrency, useful design patterns, asynchronous coding, and of course functions.

This time around we're aiming to read the entire book by the next meetup. So start your engines and let's get ready to read!

Been thinking a bit about which book to read next and I think I was the initial tie breaker between Test Driven JavaScript and JavaScript Patterns. Would like to change my vote to JavaScript Patterns since a) it is both of the organizer's choice (and without them we wouldn't have had such awesome author attended meetups) and b) it is probably a better (and quicker) read for group discussion. Though I do plan to read both so maybe do a splinter meetup for that or read it next?

Dave Herman is the nicest guy. I learned some lessons from him about getting along in contentious groups. I also learned a lot about some important corners of javascript.

Mark and David keep hitting it out of the park with this meetup.

People asked some great questions and David the author was present to answer them. Was lucky to catch this event. Thanks for hosting it.

This was a stellar meetup. Thanks Mark, David and Zencoder for making this happen. And thank you Suyash for inviting David to attend as well. Best book group ever.

One of the best meetups I've attended. Great to be able to discuss JavaScript with one of the technical committee members.

Great first time at the meetup! Thanks for being so welcoming and opinionated about TDD. It was awesome to hear David's thoughts on where JS is headed.

I have been really impressed with this book... very glad we chose it. I can go over Chapter 6: Library and API Design and could also do Chapter 2: Variable Scope if needed.

Jane, feel free to present, or simply lead, the discussion on those 2 chapters if you wish.

    Is this book for beginner?

    August 2, 2013

    • Jon A S.

I would not say that it's for a beginner. On the other hand, you often won't know how someone will respond. I can say that I am not very experienced with JavaScript and I have been enjoying this book very much. I can predict that I will reread portions of it in the future.
