Willow City Loop Wildflower Bicycle Ride

  • Apr 27, 2014 · 9:00 AM
  • Jim's Restaurant parking lot

Take a bicycle ride through one of the most scenic areas in the Hill Country, the Willow City Loop. This is a beautiful ride at any time, but if we are lucky enough to catch the wildflowers this year, it will be extraordinary.  This year we are attempting to have the bike ride one way only—13 miles, mostly downhill, with a sag wagon to bring us back.  The return bike ride up hill is pretty difficult, so hopefully, more people will be encouraged to come if we have the sag wagon.

After the ride, we will have lunch in Fredericksburg before heading back to Austin.

What to bring:  bicycle, helmet, water, sunscreen, snacks, cameras

Location (CARPOOL): 7101 W Hwy 71 (78735)
Meet at Jim's Restaurant at the 'Y' in Oak Hill.
The 'Y' is the intersection of Hwys 71 and 290.
Take Hwy 290 west from central Austin.
Right at Hwy 71 fork (the 'Y'), then an immediate left into the Jim's lot.

Location (RIDE START): Farm Rd 1323 and Willow City Loop

Find us at the ride starting point, but give us some leeway on when we might arrive, probably around 10:30 am.

From Austin: Hwy-290 to Hwy-281, Right on Hwy-281, Left on RR-1323.
Find the Willow City Loop intersection after about 23.8 miles.
Park by the Verizon hut.
Use this Google Map link to see the hut:

What an incredible ride, and how wonderful that Deb set this up, and that Sheldon planned/provided an amazing customized food truck for the benefit of so many!

Oops. The landowners didn't move the flowers, they mowed them.

I heard a rumor that the landowners moved the flowers because they were trying to limit the tourists. Deborah, we'll help with your bike wheel. There's a 30% chance of rain, but I'm hoping for the best. See y'all Sunday.

Where have all the flowers gone? (sorry). There are oodles of flowers around Austin.

No flowers?! Well, I'm coming, but I'm in pretty feeble shape this year, so it's good that the plan is for mostly downhill ;) . Looking forward to it!

I heard there were no flowers this year, but I know it will still be beautiful. Sorry Niles to be missing you.

I did the ride today (can't go next week), and it was exceptionally scenic... Map (loop section) shows elevation drop of almost 500 feet!
