Urban Athletics: Bike Around Manhattan ... the WHOLE Thing

  • Apr 13, 2013 · 9:45 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Did it last year. Want to do it again. Let's ride.

The Plan ...

A lot of people think that the only place to pedal in the city is Central Park, where you only have to dodge other bikers, joggers and pedestrians. We know better. We're going to feel the exhilaration of truly seeing this town on two wheels, we're going to circle the perimeter of the Isle of Manhattan using its waterfront greenway.

We'll start our journey in Battery Park, make our way up the Hudson River Greenway, on through the nabes of Harlem, Washington Heights, and Inwood. We certainly can't pass through Northern Manhattan without stopping for some good latin food, this time it's at Cachapas y Mas on Dyckman Street. Once we're done, we'll make our way cross town and continue down the East River Greenway back to our starting point.

Note: If you want to join this ride you will need to start with the group. I will not be making pick ups en route. I will also not be answering texts/calls after 10:00 AM.

Here is the cue sheet for the ride http://goo.gl/maps/qhbCt. Print and bring it so you can catch up with the group in case you get separated.

The Important Stuff ...

  • This is going to be a casually-paced (10 - 12 mph) ride of about 30 miles. Most of the ride will take place in greenways and bike lanes but there will be parts with some automobile congestion. You must be comfortable riding in a group and in traffic. Helmets are suggested.
  • Make sure your bike is in good working order before the meetup and bring a lock in case we need to leave our cycles. Bring a patch repair kit, air pump, and spare inner tube.
  • Rain cancels the meetup.
  • Check your email the evening before you head out for last minute meetup updates as well as my mobile phone number which will be sent to those who RSVP.
  • Please DO NOT RSVP if you do not seriously plan to attend as space is limited. No flakes allowed! If you RSVP and I notice that you have a number of no shows or have a history of last minute cancellations, you will be removed.
  • Sorry, no guests allowed for this one.

It was so great to see you all! Great route too! I was riding all these pats in bitses and pieces, but had not made a whole round before. Good planning, Aka!

I noticed that the bike rental place at Battery Park doesn't open until 10 AM, but the meet-up starts at 9:45. Would I have time to get my bike rental? This sounds like fun but I wouldn't want to hold everyone up.

Naomi, renting at the Bike and Roll Battery Park location won't work with that timing. I'd suggest renting from NY Waterfront Bike Shop (http://www.bikeshopny...) which opens at 9AM. It is located across the street from the Hudson River Greenway at about 10th street. Renting from there when they open and riding down to meet the group at 9:45AM would work fine.

Thanks! It seems like I made a mistake and the Battery Park location does open at 9 AM after all. But the Waterfront place is much cheaper-- only $25 for 6 hours as opposed to $44 for the day at Bike and Roll-- just in case other people need to rent. See you guys there!

One more question: any idea how long this ride might take? I'm wondering if I can make another wonderful event in the evening :)

    April 9, 2013

    • Kevin

We'll likely finish the ride late afternoon. If we go for a celebratory drink afterwards, who knows.

I will bike down to meet you so I will bow out when we are passing my place on the way back, otherwise will end up doing 1.5 loops!

Not a problem but I'll be handing out gold stars at the end to everyone that completes the entire ride.

Kevin, when we stop for food or such, do you think we will need a bike lock? Or will we be doing take out that we can chow on the street by the bike?

    April 8, 2013

    • Kevin

We'll be sitting inside, bring a lock. If you don't have one you'll likely be able to lock your cycle up with someone else.

Folks, if your plans have changed and you can't make the meetup, please be courteous and change your RSVP to not attending. DON'T BE A NO SHOW! No shows will be barred from RSVPing for my future events.

haven't ridden all winter, would love to have my first meetup with the group be this one

I'd love to join...Is there a place nearby where I could rent a bike?

    March 12, 2013

    • Kevin

Yes. The easiest rental location would be the Bike and Roll NYC concession in Battery Park.
