Not So Urban Athletics: Camping in Ricketts Glen State Park

Final trip details posted, please read at

Waterfalls, waterfalls, oh so many waterfalls!!! Join me for a weekend of camping at Ricketts Glen state park and we'll have dreams of waterfalls for weeks to come.

Voted one of the most scenic parks in Pennsylvania, the 13,050 acre Ricketts Glen natural area boasts a series of twenty-two wild, free-flowing waterfalls, each cascading through rock-strewn clefts in the ancient hillside. Wow. The old growth timber and diversity of wildlife only add to the breathtaking scenery. And although the park is known for its waterfalls and 26 miles of hiking trails, there is much more to do here. The campground is situated on a 245 acre lake where you can swim, rent a canoe or kayak for a paddle, try your hand at catching a trophy fish, or just sit lakeside and catch up on your reading.

The Plan ...

We'll arrive Friday afternoon at the campground, check in, and head to our campsite to set up our tents and other gear. From here we can do as much or as little as we'd like until dinner that evening. Saturday we'll awake and make breakfast, and then you can join me as I lead an organized hike along the seven mile waterfall trail which is the main reason we are here. In the evening we'll cook and have a communal meal over an open fire, and spend the rest of the evening doing the usual camping activities -- partaking in adult beverages and stuffing our faces with snacks, playing games, and shooting the breeze. Sunday we'll get up and make breakfast, break down our campsite, and can continue to explore what the campground has to offer.

Food Plan ...

  • To keep it simple, everyone is responsible for bringing what food and snacks they would like to eat and drink.
  • We will be cooking dinner Friday, breakfast and dinner Saturday, and breakfast Sunday and it will be semi-communal, meaning bring what you would like to eat for yourself but perhaps also enough to share with a few other people. Simple to cook but interesting items are best.

Other Important Stuff ...

  • When you RSVP, please comment if you have camping gear to bring (tent, sleeping bag, etc.).
  • Everyone can have a single person tent or several multi-person tents at the campsite. I'd suggest buddy-ing up to save hauling space/equipment costs. It doesn't matter to me if the accommodations are co-ed or gender segregated, everyone can decide what is most comfortable for them.
  • Rental gear (tents, sleeping bags, etc.) is available at the Tents and Trails store in downtown NYC, Gear to Go Outfitters in Park Slope, Brooklyn, Eastern Mountain Sports and at several REI stores in the NY/NJ area.
  • If you are unsure what to pack, click HERE for a list. You won't need to bring everything on here, but it's a good start. If you are still unsure, please ask.
  • The campground has flush restroom facilities, warm showers, clean water, and pay phones. We are not auditioning for Survivor here.
  • Parking at the site is limited to 5 cars, the rest will need to park in the overflow lot a short distance away.
  • RSVP only if you are definitely going. If you have commitment issues, please DO NOT RSVP. If you RSVP and have a history of no shows or last minute cancellations, you will be removed.
  • Meetup will be cancelled only in the event of a zombie apocalypse or locust swarm of biblical proportions. Possibility of rain or any other precipitation and we still camp.

How To Get There ... Carpool!

Ricketts Glen State Park
695 State Road 487, Benton, PA
GPS Coordinates
(Latitude, Longitude)
[masked], [masked]

We'll need to carpool to the campground. When you RSVP, please indicate if need a ride. Or if you plan to drive, where you are coming from and how many passengers you can take. We'll then figure out our carpooling options, please be proactive and contact a driver directly rather than just saying where you need a ride from. Gas and tolls should be picked up by the passengers, also a cup of coffee for the driver is a nice gesture.

This is event is cross-posted in Evenings & Weekends in New York City at and Life out Loud ... at so be sure to check there when looking for a carpool.

It was my first camping trip....I can't wait to do it again soon... Everyone was super friendly, the BBQ feast was incredible...
However, I almost pass out when I got home...I gained 7 pounds...
how's that possible? I don't remember I ate a cow... Special Thanks for Kevin for organizing the event, Katherine for drinving/housing/feeding me and Lonnie came to the rescue for everything...

btw,my best friend (my canon camera) was dead because the rain in the tent. I barely took any photo this time, however, I will see if I can post other photos from my mobile phone....low quality is better than nothing...

~ For Eric (aka the mini Chris)....someone left a knife in my utensil bag..It matches your most wanted knife description (black handle, curvy with made in china logo on the side).... How you want to get it back? I guess 5 dollars ransom is good enough for me...

Hope to see everyone again soon .^_^.

Excellent weekend my friends! Loved the diversity of people on this event ... new and old meetup members, folks new to the outdoors and those that would be comfortable living in a tree, you all came together to enjoy the beauty of our environment and participate in the comraderie of our little camping community. You were all terrific and I look forward to seeing you again on the next adventure.

Great trip! Even greater group!!! The waterfalls and scenery were fantastic. They were only outmatched by the warmth and spirit of our fellow campers! I could not have asked for a nicer group of "strangers" who bonded so seamlessly. Thanks so much everyone for your hospitality and kindness. It was truly a pleasure meeting you all. Hope to see some of you again! Keep posting pics! & Keep in touch! Love<3

Where do I start... Sitting in LGA right now chilling in the delta lounge sipping on goodness, crackers, and cheese. So..yes I made it back in time. Smelling like campfire smoke.. I guess i can use the line... It's the scent of... Tarzan A story to sum up the quality of the weekend.. My ladies of the cheng caravan asked... wow.. How long have you been with this meetup group and known these people? I replied, just met them today. They gasp in disbelief. The idea behind this story speaks to the quality of people within the group that made a stranger feel comfortable and engaging. Today, many eyes will gaze over others without a warm hello, then go on with their business. Thanks for making it easy to incorporate into the group, great weekend and the conversations.

Hope to catch some of you in future outings!!

Hello everyone! I am leaving tomorrow around 10sh here in NJ. Since it will be too hard to catch up the ride with Roxy/Andrea...with the timing involved for train, train switching and carrying my supplies, it will be too much of a hassle for me and I may not make it there on time, so I will just drive on my own. I drive long distance consistently, so I am cool with this! Anyone around Woodbridge-NJ area, I can offer a lift! Here's my number 3016052056. See you guys tomorrow.

My people, this is going to be a great camping trip, I'm looking forward to it. Just a quick comment as you all will be shopping for your food/drink stuff in the next few days.

I have not camped here before but from what I have read and experienced at other PA campgrounds, they are very serious with their rules. There is a no alcohol policy in Pennsylvania campgrounds and I understand they are very stringent with the enforcement of this here, to the point of examining your cooler. I wouldn't recommend it, but if you do intend to bring alcohol I would transfer it to an unidentifiable containers at home and drink responsibly.

If the park rangers catch you with alcohol any summons/fines you receive and ensuing issues are your responsibility.

Also note, the park is a bit off the beaten path and access to grocery stores in the area is limited. Make sure you bring everything you will want to eat/drink for the two days with you as you can't just pop over to Whole Foods to restock.

You got me on the first sentence, but killer damper on the 2nd paragraph. Any idea How much is the fine? Is this their money making scheme where you pay fine keep drinking? Or confiscate?

      July 2, 2013

    • Kevin

From what I have read, it's a $100+ fine and they confiscate your alcohol.
