*** No need to RSVP "No" if not attending ***

A few weeks ago I led you guys on a spectacular night hike through Harriman State Park and I know there were those of you out there that wanted to go but were a bit intimidated with the thought of trekking through the dark forest at midnight. Here is your chance to dip your toe in the water and get an introduction to the excitement of what a night hike is like on this beginner-friendly trek. And the best part -- you can get there with a single swipe of your metrocard.

The Plan ...

This will be a relatively easy night hike, taking us across the George Washington Bridge (GWB) and through part of the Palisades Interstate Park.

We'll start out on 178th street and walk over the bridge on the pedestrian pathway – it's a great walk with fabulous views of Manhattan and New Jersey, made even better at dusk. This is a bit of a different experience than crossing over other urban bridges as the walkway is at the edge of the span and you can look straight down at the Hudson river.

Once over the bridge we'll turn North and head up the Long Path in the Palisades Interstate Park. This is the beginning of the Long Path hiking trail which begins near the GWB in Fort Lee and continues 350 miles north to Albany. We'll walk about 4 miles up the path through Allison Park and descend to riverside where we will break for dinner. There are great views here of the Hudson River, GWB, and the Washington Heights and Inwood sections of Manhattan. By now it will be completely dark as we make our way back to the GWB and Manhattan, with only our headlamps and the soft glow of the distant city lights to guide us.

A $2.00 organization fee will be collected at this event, your organizer is in the running for hardest working person on meetup.

The Important Stuff …

  • Distance traveled will be about 8 miles. This is a beginner night hike but that doesn't mean come unprepared! Wear clothing appropriate for the activity and sneakers/hiking shoes are a must. Also do not forget your headlamp/flashlight and insect repellent.
  • Bring water and dinner/snacks, we'll be stopping about halfway through the walk to eat.
  • Bathroom opportunities will be limited along the walk, so please coordinate your fluid intake accordingly.
  • RSVP only if you seriously plan to attend as space is limited. If you RSVP and I notice you have a number of no shows or a history of last minute cancellations, you will be removed.
  • Rain cancels the hike.

Meeting Point/Mass Transit Directions ...

We'll be meeting at the entrance to the GWB pedestrian walkway on the corner of 178th Street and Cabrini Boulevard. Take the A subway train to 175th Street and walk three blocks north, turn left, and walk two blocks to Cabrini Boulevard. We'll be starting the walk promptly at 6:45 PM, please don't be late.

I apologize for the cancellation but have an unanticipated conflict. I hope you do another night hike soon and that someone else can still use my place.

People, it looks like we are going to have beautiful weather for this evening's hike and an almost full moon to top it off. My mobile number is[masked], if you have problems text or call. Please be on time as I can't wait for latecomers.

    Remember to ...
    1) Wear appropriate clothing and shoes for physical activity
    2) Bring your HEADLIGHT or FLASHLIGHT
    3) Not be bug food, bring insect repellent
    4) Have a snack or dinner with you and bring enough water/fluids (2 liters should do)
    5) Have exact change ($2) for the meetup fee, it is much appreciated

And finally, please don't be a NO SHOW -- change your RSVP to not attending if you can't make it.

You sent us an e-mail containing the following message: "RSVP limit: 16 "Yes" RSVPs" What does that mean?

    June 20, 2013

    • Kevin

This event was originally scheduled to have 16 participants but due to the unanticipated popularity of this event, I have added more attendees.

    Can't wait for it

My friends, if your plans have changed and you can't make this event, please change your RSVP to not attending. I have the memory of an elephant and if you "no show" or cancel last minute, you will earn a not so coveted place on the black list. That means you will forever be prohibited from attending my future events. Yeah, you don't want that.

I would bring +1 guest as well. Thank you!

    June 19, 2013

    • Kevin

That is fine, Brigitta, but it is your responsibility to make sure your guest is properly equipped for this event -- lighting, clothing, etc. Anyone that isn't so will not be allowed to participate. This goes for anyone that wants to bring an amigo on this walk.

    June 19, 2013

Sola, you can join us at 8pm but it will be up to you to catch up to the group wherever we may be.

My friends, an added bonus for this hike -- Friday is the summer solstice. The first day of summer as well as the longest day of the year. Feel free to bring an adult beverage to celebrate.

Ha, I don't want you to get your hopes up. :)

Lol, should be fun, we'll just walk around with headlamps off & try not to step on each other or any wildlife

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
