Urban Athletics: Bike the Palisades and Unleash Your Inner Indiana Jones

*** No need to RSVP "no" if not attending ***

If you're not a spandex clad road cyclist chances are you've never ventured to ride the area in Jersey North of the George Washington Bridge. 'Tis a shame as some of the best scenery to behold is literally a stones throw away from Northern Manhattan in the New Jersey Palisades.

The Plan ...

Today we're going to bike across the George Washington Bridge, head down to the banks of the Hudson and ride. And then ride some more. But we're not just cycling aimlessly and enjoying the greenery -- our goal is to make it to the ruins of Cliffdale Manor. These are the largest ruins in the Palisades Interstate Park of what was once a palatial turn-of-the-century mansion overlooking the Hudson River. In a bit of foresight as to what damage urban expansion can do, the property was purchased by John D. Rockefeller, Jr. in 1930 along with much of the surrounding area and the estate razed in an attempt to halt over-development of the Palisades cliffs spurred by the newly built George Washington Bridge. Interesting stuff, read a bit more about the ruins HERE. We'll have to leave our bikes and hike a little to get to the building's remnants so wear comfortable shoes.

A $2.00 organization fee will be collected at this event, your host is in the running for the title of hardest working person on meetup.

** If you don't want to travel all the way downtown to start, I'll be making a secondary pick up at the corner of West 177th Steet & Fort Washington Avenue @ 10:45 AM. **

The Important Stuff ...

  • This is going to be a casually-paced (12 mph) ride of about 42 miles round trip if you leave from City Hall, 22 miles if you meet the group at the GWB. You must be comfortable riding in a group and in traffic. Helmets are required -- no helmet, no ride.
  • The terrain in the Palisades will consist of rolling hillsand be challenging so if you abhor riding hills or are of questionable cardiovascular fitness you should sit this one out.
  • We'll be exploring a bit on foot so make sure you wear comfortable walking shoes.
  • Bring lunch and something to drink. We'll stop to eat at the ruins and options to buy refreshments along the way are limited.
  • Make sure your bike is in good working order before the meetup and bring a lock to leave our cycles. Bring a spare inner tube, patch repair kit, and air pump.
  • Rain cancels the meetup.
  • Check your email before you head out for last minute meetup updates as well as my mobile phone number which will be sent to those who RSVP.
  • Please DO NOT RSVP if you do not seriously plan to attend as space is limited. No flakes allowed! If you RSVP and I notice that you have a number of no shows or have a history of last minute cancellations, you will be removed.
  • Sorry, no guests allowed for this one.

What an awesome bike ride, beautiful scenery and people to boot! Great bunch to ride and hang with. I agree those berries were a sweet treasure! Thanks again Kevin!

Sweet ride my friends. Glad you all could come out and join, we had so much fun not even a little shower or two could ruin it for us. What was my favorite part of the day though? Stumbling upon the wild raspberry bushes! Delicious.

Perfectly crafted adventure as always, Kevin. Guess that's why you always have such a mixture of newbies and veterans.

Riders, my mobile number is[masked], contact me if you have any problems Saturday morning. Please be on time as I can't wait for latecomers.

    Don't forget ...
    1) To bring what you need for a roadside flat repair -- tools, spare tube, pump, and patch kit.
    2) A bike lock and wear shoes appropriate for a short walk to the ruins.
    3) Your lunch and adequate water for the day, at least 2 liters.
    4) Exact change for the meetup fee.

Don't be a no show -- if your plans have changed and you can't make this meetup, please change your RSVP. See you all Saturday!

    hi Kevin,
    I am a first timer here :)
I really want to join saturday's riding but not sure if I can make it. need your opinion!
I commute with my bike from brooklyn to soho almost every day but never done this long distance. also my bike is fixie - it has brakes though.
well,, should I just wait and join next time when you guys doing shorter and easier riding?

any idea or advice would be appreciated! Thank you!!!

    Soy

    July 11, 2013

    • Kevin

Hard to say. I guess the biggest question is not one of distance but how are you on hills with your fixie as this is not going to be flat terrain. If hills don't bother you then I'd say you'll be fine. Where would you be meeting the group at? City Hall or at the GWB?

    July 11, 2013

    • Kevin

Probably late afternoon, but you can always leave at any time to return if you need to be back home by a certain time. It's an easy ride direction wise.

Is there going to be anyone going over the cliff this time? Any volunteers?

    June 26, 2013

    • Jo

Kevin, do you think I can make this with my biking skill? Feel free to tell me not to go or how to self gauge if it is for me.

      June 30, 2013

    • Kevin

Jo, I think you'll be fine. Just stay away from the edges of the cliffs please. :)

      July 2, 2013

  • Denise

What type of terrain should I expect?

    June 25, 2013
