Urban Athletics: Bike the NYC Bridges by Night

*** Please, no need to RSVP "NO" if not attending ***

[One of my long-time members requested that I repeat this ride for an out-of-town visitor they're having for the holiday weekend. So if you missed this ride the first time around, you're in luck.]

The other night I was on my bike riding around town and was struck by how dramatically the vibe of the city changes once the sun sets. People get out on their cycles and enjoy this town during the day but most of us put them away when the evening comes. That's like ordering a slice of pizza, throwing away the cheese and only eating the crust -- you're only getting half of what makes the experience great.

The Plan ...

We are going to take a nighttime tour of the East River bridges, we'll wheel through three boroughs and cross over five spans -- the Queensboro, Pulaski, Williamsburg, Manhattan, and Brooklyn bridges. This ride will highlight the stunning vistas only viewable from our water crossings and take in different views of the sparkling nighttime Manhattan skyline. If there was ever a time to go through the hassle of carrying your camera with you, this will be it. Our reward for the evening's effort will be a stop at Brooklyn's world famous Junior's Cheesecake to pick up something sweet to eat which we'll enjoy while relaxing at the DUMBO waterfront.

A $3.00 organization fee will be collected at this event, your host is in the running for the title of hardest working person at meetup.

The Important Stuff ...

• This is going to be a casually-paced ride of about 17 miles. Most of the ride will take place in bike lanes but there will be parts with some automobile congestion. You must be comfortable riding in a group and in traffic. Helmets are suggested. Lights and reflectors for your bike are REQUIRED by law.

• This is a night ride so dress to be seen by motorists and pedestrians -- bright or reflective clothing is a must.

• Make sure your bike is in good working order before the meetup and bring a lock in case we need to leave our cycles. Also bring a patch repair kit, air pump, and spare inner tube.

• Rain cancels the meetup.

• Check your email the evening before you head out for last minute meetup updates as well as my mobile phone number which will be sent to those who RSVP.

• Please DO NOT RSVP if you do not seriously plan to attend as space is limited. No flakes allowed! If you RSVP and I notice that you have a number of no shows or have a history of last minute cancellations, you will be removed.

• Sorry, no guests allowed for this one.

Awesome! Amazing! We had a blast last night. Beer and shots throughout the night cut my memory short but my oil covered clothes and this headache says

Everyone was very friendly and easy going. The ride was smooth, even though it took place in the City it still went smooth and at a reasonable speed. I wouldn't have done this alone. Thank you everyone for making the ride a wonderful experience and most of all thank you Kevin for organizing this event.

    Hi Kevin,
I can't believe I am going to miss this. I have been looking forward to this all week. I am so freakin upset. I have been sick all day from something I ate yesterday. I have been hydrating all day hoping to feel better but with an hour to meet I have decided it is best for all if I do not go. Would not want get sick in middle of ride or give anybody a bug just in case... Safe riding :-(

Is it okay if I ride kinda slow tonight? I skated 127 miles around the city today on my left skate alone (I forgot my other one at home), so I'm less than 100%. Hope not to be a Debbie Downer.

People, my mobile number is[masked]-9034. Contact me if you have any problems. Please be on time as I can't wait for latecomers. If your plans have changed please change your RSVP to not attending -- no shows are frowned upon and if you do that you will not be allowed to attend any of my future events.

Don't forget to bring your bike lights, wear light colored or reflective clothing, and bring everything you need to repair a flat tire. Also, please bring small bills for the meetup fee and money to buy something to eat later in the evening.

Hi Kevin, can you recommend a place to rent a bike around Chelsea or Midtown? Thanks

      54th st and bway..

I would go to the day bike shop rentals that rent for the day and negotiate with them to keep the bike overnight and bring back in the am. The rental time will be the same as if you rented it during the day. You can return the bike first thing in the am, back in time for his daily renters.

Are we meeting at 59 st or city hall at 7:00 ?

    August 29, 2013

    • Kevin

Davy D, what up? You haven't mastered the skill of being in two places at one time?? My bad with that, I'm doing you a favor and moving this ride uptown, we're leaving from Columbus circle.

      August 29, 2013

  • Daniela

I don't have a bike either but i was thinking to rent one of those city bikes for a day. Would that be okay Kevin?

    August 27, 2013

    • Daniela

I think this can be rented for a 24hrs period, but will find out.

      August 27, 2013

    • Kevin

You can buy a 24 hour pass, but can only have a bike out 30 minutes at a time.

      August 27, 2013

  • Julie

Hey Kev - is the ride ending in Brooklyn or are we going back to Central Park?

    August 27, 2013

    • Kevin

We will be ending downtown at city hall.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
