Not So Urban Athletics: Hike Bonticou Crag and Table Rock

  • Aug 9, 2014 · 9:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

We were at a party
His ear lobe fell in the deep
Someone reached in and grabbed it
It was a rock monster

Rock monster!
Rock monster!

Wait, what? I got that wrong?? The B-52s were singing about a rock LOBSTER? Awwww, hell, whatever...WE'RE going to continue being rock monsters on our third rock scrambling outing this year. We're heading back up to what has become our playground, the Shawangunk Mountains, as we stomp all over the Bonticou Crag and Table Rocks.

This loop hike follows carriage roads, passing by bucolic scenery until we reach Bonticou Crag. Here we'll tackle a bonkers rock scramble to the top of the crag, with its expansive views over the surrounding countryside. In and out, up and down, we play in the rocks...then make our way over to the Table Rocks cliffs to play some more.

A $3.00 organization fee will be collected at this event, your organizer is in the running for hardest working person on meetup. While everyone else is running in the other direction, I'll be the first one to jump in front of that bear when he tries to eat you.

The Important Stuff ...

• This is going to be an ADVANCED loop hike of about 7 miles round trip. You don't need to be a world-class athlete to participate, but you need to be in decent physical shape as this is one of the more challenging treks in area with an 1,100' elevation gain and major rock scrambles. We'll be out all day so leave your afternoon/evening open.

• This is a social hike, the pace will be moderate -- we'll be stopping to take in the views and smell the flowers. If you yearn to channel your inner Mountain Goat and feel the need to race everyone to the top of the mountain, this is not the hiking trip for you.

• Dress in layers of non-cotton clothing, wear hiking boots or trail shoes (I wouldn't recommend sneakers but that is at your discretion), a hat, bring 2-3 liters of fluid, a packed lunch and/or snacks, and sunscreen.

• There is a preserve day use fee of $12.00 per person, cash only.

• Rain cancels the hike.

• No guests allowed, sorry.

• RSVP only if you seriously plan to attend as space is limited.

How To Get There ...

[masked], [masked]

Take the New York State Thruway to Exit 18 (New Paltz). After paying the toll, turn left onto Route 299 and continue west through the Village of New Paltz. After crossing the bridge over the Wallkill River at the west end of the village, turn right onto Springtown Road, following signs for the Mohonk Mountain House. At the next intersection, turn left onto Mountain Rest Road. Continue on Mountain Rest Road for 3.3 miles to the entrance to the Mohonk Mountain House at the top of the hill. Continue ahead downhill for 1.0 mile and turn right onto Upper 27 Knolls Road. The Spring Farm parking area of the Mohonk Preserve is just ahead on the left.

Please post if you are driving and can pick up passengers (how many and from where), If you need a ride, please be proactive and contact a driver directly. Passengers, as a courtesy you should chip in for gas, tolls, and coffee for the driver.

At the approach, we peered into the sky
A shattered mountain and buzzards on the fly
Looking up, our worries began to nag
Looking down, we knew we shag the crag

A little poem to express the awesomeness of the day. Shout out to Jim for coming up with shag the crag and to the group who shagged it twice!

I'm really bummed to have to change my RSVP. I woke up today with a fever and a painfully stiff neck. I offered a ride to 3 other people. If there are any drivers out there with extra room in your car would you please reach out to Lia and John, who now don't have a ride? Lia and John, I hope you both will be able to get a ride. Sorry again.

      August 8, 2014

  • Kevin

Hikers, f your plans have changed and you can’t make the event, NOW would be a good time to change your RSVP. I take attendance and common courtesy seriously and no shows earn a special place in the black hole of poor behavior, banished from attending any of my fantastic events ever again.

Hi Jim do you still have room?

      August 7, 2014

  • Kevin

Hikers, my mobile number is[masked]-9034. Our planned start time is 9:00 AM; please try and arrive a little bit early—I WON’T wait for latecomers and won’t be answering my phone after we begin hiking. When you arrive at the parking lot, look for me. If your plans have changed and you can’t make the event, NOW would be a good time to change your RSVP. Please note:

    1) Wear hiking shoes/boots, a hat and quick drying non-cotton clothes. It’s going to be a warm and sunny day so dress in layers you can peel off.

    2) We’ll be on trail about 5-6 hours so bring enough food/snacks and a MINIMUM of 2 liters of water, and don’t forget your insect repellent.

    3) When you get to the meeting point, please come see me so I can sign you in. Also, please bring small bills or exact change for the meetup fee as well as money to pay the state for use of their lovely park.
