Here is your chance to dip your toe in the water and get an introduction to the excitement of what a night hike is like on this beginner-friendly trek. And the best part -- you can get there with a single swipe of your metrocard.

The Plan ...

This will be a relatively easy night hike, taking us across the George Washington Bridge (GWB) and through part of the Palisades Interstate Park.

We'll start out on 178th street and walk over the bridge on the pedestrian pathway – it's a great walk with fabulous views of Manhattan and New Jersey, made even better at dusk. This is a bit of a different experience than crossing over other urban bridges as the walkway is at the edge of the span and you can look straight down at the Hudson river.

Once over the bridge we'll turn North and head up the Long Path in the Palisades Interstate Park. This is the beginning of the Long Path hiking trail which begins near the GWB in Fort Lee and continues 350 miles north to Albany. We'll walk about 4 miles up the path through Allison Park and descend to riverside where we will break for dinner. There are great views here of the Hudson River, GWB, and the Washington Heights and Inwood sections of Manhattan. By now it will be completely dark as we make our way back to the GWB and Manhattan, with only our headlamps, the full moon and the soft glow of the distant city lights to guide us.

A $3.00 organization fee will be collected at this event, your organizer is in the running for hardest working person on meetup.

The Important Stuff …

Distance traveled will be about 8 miles. This is a beginner night hike but that doesn't mean come unprepared! Wear clothing appropriate for the activity and sneakers/hiking shoes are a must. Also do not forget your headlamp/flashlight and insect repellent.

Bring water and dinner/snacks, we'll be stopping about halfway through the walk to eat.

Bathroom opportunities will be limited along the walk, so please coordinate your fluid intake accordingly.

RSVP only if you seriously plan to attend as space is limited. If you RSVP and I notice you have a number of no shows or a history of last minute cancellations, you will be removed.

Rain cancels the hike.

Meeting Point/Mass Transit Directions ...

We'll be meeting at the entrance to the GWB pedestrian walkway on the corner of 178th Street and Cabrini Boulevard. Take the A subway train to 175th Street and walk three blocks north, turn left, and walk two blocks to Cabrini Boulevard. We'll be starting the walk promptly at 6:45 PM, please don't be late.

Since I live on the Jersey side, just down River Road, I will be jumping off the hike at the end as you all head back over the bridge toward the NY side. Any objections? I've only walked/run over the bridge, but have never hiked in the Park. I'm looking forward to a great time.

I think after 7 its free. I unfortunately have a family emergency this morning and have to catch a red eye flight out. So I wont be able to join you.

People, my mobile number is[masked]-9034. Contact me if you have any problems tomorrow evening. We meet at 6:45PM. Please try and arrive a little bit early—I WON’T wait for latecomers and do not answer my phone after we begin.

    1) This is an easy hike/walk but that DOES NOT MEAN COME UNPREPARED. Bring a headlamp/flashlight, food and water/drink for a dinner stop, insect repellent. Wear clothes designed for activity and sneakers/hiking shoes, there are ticks and poison ivy in the area we’ll be walking so you may want to wear long pants as a precaution.

    2) We’ll be returning to Manhattan around 11pm so don’t make early evening plans and stress out about getting back in time.

    3) Bathroom access is limited on the walk–forego your evening grande mochacchino and use the bathroom BEFORE you meet the group.

    4) When you get to the meeting point, please come see me so I can sign you in. Also, please bring small bills or exact change for the meetup fee.

I have never gone really hiking, I would just call it nature walks, so this one should be my first night hike. Any suggestions about what may be best to wear? Long pants? Long or short sleeves? Is there a possibility of ticks? Last question I promise... When the $3.00 should be paid? I am looking forward to the hike and to meet you all. Thanks.

It is more of a walk than a hike, so it is not really too strenuous. However, this does not mean to come unprepared. Bring a headlamp/flashlight and adequate water to last you the 8 miles. I would suggest wearing comfortable clothes and sneakers/hiking shoes. However, there is a possibility of ticks and poison ivy as we are in the woods. The 3 dollars will be collected at the start of the journey when you sign in.

Sure, but please have your guest sign up for themselves with their own Meetup account so it helps me keep tabs on attendance as it is a popular event
