Not So Urban Athletics: Snowboarding or Skiing the Catskills

  • January 27, 2013 · 9:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

It's the season for winter sports, let's head up to the Catskills and spend the day Snowboarding or Skiing at Windham Mountain.

The Plan ...

We'll meet in front of the lift ticket sales windows at 9:00 AM. After a quick meet and greet, those that need rental equipment and instructional lessons will make those arrangements. We'll then split up and the experienced riders/skiers will join me as we head up the mountain for a few hours of fun.

At midday, we'll all meet at the lodge for lunch to laugh about how our mornings went and to nurse our bruises. After lunch I'll join the beginners on the slopes for a bit to help them out with their newly learned skills while the others can spend a few more hours exploring the mountain before we call it a day.

Then Important Stuff ...

  • The regular cost for an adult weekend lift ticket at the mountain is $72.00 but special pricing of $39.95 is available for this date through Potter Brothers Ski Shop. The discount lift ticket MUST be purchased either online and mailed to you, or purchased at one of their stores in the upstate NY area -- there is one on the way to Windham if you are driving.  If you plan to buy online, do so in enough time for the pass to get to you by mail.
  • Rentals on mountain for Skis and Snowboards start at $40.00 for the complete package. If you only need to rent certain pieces of gear, prices vary.
  • Group lessons are $34.00 for one hour and forty-five minutes of instruction. If you don't have your own gear, there is a group lesson package for $89.00 that includes everything you need including a lower-mountain lift ticket. The first class is at 10:00 AM and I definitely recommend you take one if you are a beginner or want to brush up on your skills -- the learning curve is reduced dramatically and the fun factor increases with a little bit of professional instruction.
  • Bus operators offer packages that include transportation, lift passes, equipment rentals and lessons, often at a lower combination price.  Please visit the tour operator's websites below for details and costs.
  • RSVP only if you seriously plan to attend as space is limited. If you RSVP and I notice you have a number of no shows or a history of last minute cancellations, you will be removed.
  • Rain cancels the meetup.

How To Get There ...

By Bus:

There are numerous companies that operate bus trips to Windham Mountain and have pick up locations in Manhattan and other areas of the city. Trips usually include transportation and lift ticket, but many operators offer packages that also include equipment and lessons.

Click the following tour operators to take a look and see what package best suits you: NYC Ski and Board, Emilio's Ski and Snowboard, Blades NYC, Island Ski Tours, and New York Mountain Tours.

After you plan your trip, make a comment under your RSVP to let others know so you can have a little company for the ride.

Driving:

From Exit 21 on I-87/New York State Thruway, Windham is 23 miles on state highway Route 23 (which is a well-maintained route all year round).

If you plan to drive and are willing to carpool, please post in your RSVP where you are leaving from and how many people you can carry. If you'd like to carpool with someone please post your request and where you are located. Please don't wait to be offered a ride, BE PROACTIVE and contact any drivers directly to work out transportation details. As  courtesy, passengers should pick up tolls and gas.

This event is cross-posted in I wanted to do that ... just not alone! Check there when trying to set up a carpool http://www.meetup.com/E-W-N-Y-C/events/93911442/

It felt like I jumped way higher than that. I think it must be the camera angle........

      January 30, 2013

    • Kevin

Well, you were actually about 6 feet off the ground, it was the refraction of sunlight in the camera lens that only made it seem like a foot. :-P

Best ski trip ever! I can't believe I attempted my firsts jump! Even though I fell on the first one, I still had a blast. It was great to see others do their first jumps too. Awesome stuff!

Excellent time at the mountain today my peeps. I always say that it's not the activity that makes a meetup great, it's the people that attend. That couldn't have been truer today.

I have sent everyone my contact info via email, don't leave home without it. If you haven't received it, speak up and let me know. Also, if your plans have changed and you aren't going to make the meetup, change your RSVP to not attending -- DON'T BE A NO SHOW!

Peeps, due to a cancellation I have a seat available in my car. I'm can pick up in lower Manhattan and maybe somewhere in Western Brooklyn. Fair warning, it's going to be hella early though -- we'll be watching the sunrise in the rearview.

      January 24, 2013

For those riding the bus to the mountain, what time is it scheduled to arrive? Also, can someone/anyone that is riding the bus send me their mobile phone number in case I need to contact you if you're running late?

Got it, thanks! I haven't ridden the bus up there in a long time but I figured it was somewhere in the vicinity of 9AM.

What do I need I'm a beginner I got my ticket I see that there are some people I met at other meetup group that's good so I won't feel bad about being a new person I'm a fun person who love to have fun can't wait to go

    January 20, 2013

    • Kevin

Tara, If you aren't planning on hitting the slopes every weekend I'd recommend going cheap your clothes. You can pick up some low cost, name brand ski jackets and pants at Burlington and Marshalls/TJ Maxx. You'll also want to pick up some polypropylene or smartwool long underwear as your non-cotton sweat wicking base layer. Also don't forget your wool ski socks. If the jacket you buy is just a shell and not heavily lined you're also going to want to pick up a fleece pullover or jacket to wear under it as your insulating layer.

      Thanks Kevin!

    January 20, 2013

    • Kevin

Carolyn, where are you driving from and where can you make easy pick ups?

      January 20, 2013

  • Kevin

People, if your plans have changed, please change your RSVP to "not attending". No shows and last minute cancellations will be looked upon with the stink eye and affect your ability to attend my future meetups. Thanks!

    January 20, 2013

  • Ivonne

Hello Guys. I have 2 spots available in the car... I'm coming from Queens and i can pick up people in Queens or Manhattan. Let me know if you still need a ride. We'll figure out the logistics

    January 16, 2013

    • Ivonne

The car is now full.. We are ready to have fun!!!

      January 18, 2013

  • Kevin

@Everyone, we have people of all skill levels attending this event so no one should worry about having to ski or board alone although that is a great way to find your zen. So don't let that thought hold you back from attending.

Cool! I think we got the same thing then.

    January 13, 2013

    January 13, 2013

    • Michelle

Welp, I bought the beginner's snowboard package from NYC Ski and Board/Urban Sherpa so I guess we are in the same boat now!

Hi Magaly, I am not... I already have own skis etc so just got the bus rather than any package. Would be happy to ride with you though!

      January 8, 2013

    • Marie

Hi Julia i bought the same ride. Hope to you there.

I know spot's are limited, but I should find out today if I don't have to work that day, if so I might be able to drive some people from the city.

    January 7, 2013

  • Michelle

Hi! I should be able to come, barring any last minute obligations...anyone interested in snowboard beginner's class and possibly taking a bus? (similar to Magaly's request below but with snowboarding instead of skiing...though maybe it's essentially the same request? :P)

    December 7, 2012

    • Kevin

Michelle, that would be a different class and instructor. No worries though, I am sure there will be more beginner snowboarders signing up as the meetup draws nearer. Also you may want to cross post your inquiry to the EWNYC listing I linked to above.

      December 7, 2012

  • magaly

I would like to try my hand at skiing. Is anyone going to take a beginners class and taking the bus?

    December 6, 2012

    • Maarij

I will be doing beginners class too.

      December 7, 2012

    • Kevin

Just a heads up, most tour operators won't have their January bus schedules ready until the end of the month so don't fret if you can't get that plan squared away for a bit.
