10:00AM-11:00AM – Micro Controller Theory - presented by Ron Schubot

This session will introduce you to microcontrollers, what they are
and how to use them. It will answer the questions:

    What is a microcontroller?
    What can it do?
    Which microcontroller should I use?
    What does a microcontroller contain?
    What controls a microcontroller? (software)
How do you debug a microcontroller program
Do I need to know anything about electronics?
What circuits are useful to know about?
    What is pulse width modulation
What types of sensors and actuators are available?
What tools and test equipment should I have?

This presentation is based on the Introduction to Microcontrollers presentation
by Michael Parks that is available at:

9:00AM-10:00AM - Electronics Primer - presented by Jon Roberts

The electronics primer class will cover basic electronics as it relates to the Arduino and robotics in general. The class will start with a quick overview on Ohm's law and the various formulas used to calculate voltage, current, resistance, power, etc. Then we will get into power (AC/DC), power sources (batteries, transformers, etc.), load (amperage) and filtering & decoupling. From there we will go into resistors (and potentiometers) and capacitors. Transistors can be next, covering the two basic types, packages and basic operation. Next, we will cover indicators such as incandescent lights, LEDs, etc. and them transition into inputs (switches and other contacts). Relays and motors will be next covering the basic on these and maybe getting into how to connect them to the Arduino to make them run. Servos could be last.

It is looking like October 25-27 will be the new date. Let us plan to meet after the general meeting in September to see how everyone's presentations are going.

I need people to vote which weekend would work for you? October 4-6 or Oct 18-20 or 25-27?
(Al let us know if these dates won't work.)
(I cannot do the missing weekend in October above)

    September 3, 2013

    • Melanie M

I think either one of the later weekends in Oct should work for me as well.

      September 4, 2013

    • Ronald S.

The October 20th is the date of the Kalamazoo Hamfest so I am not available plus Kevin is supposed to do a presentation there. The other weekends are ok for me.

      September 4, 2013

  • Kevin B.

It seems that the weekend selected will not work directly. The Airzoo has the building booked for another event. Al Holloway suggested moving to the following weekend. This would be October 4-6, 2013.

The first two weekends in October are open for us, the third my wife will be out of town. If we end up pushing this to October I would suggest having a regular meeting in September, my show and tell pile is getting pretty high :)

So is it going to be the first weekend in October or are things still up in the air?

      September 3, 2013

    Other notes:
The weekend will focus on the Uno
    Kevin W. has a projector
Request three rooms from the Air Zoo, two for classroom use and one for work area.
Switch programs between the two classrooms to save in setup time.
Team needs to provide a list of required components for projects to Kevin W. include where to buy the items, how much and material/item number by the beginning of September.
Try to use items in the basic Uno set for projects.
Jake is going to figure out a randomized wheeled type cart to race.
Kevin W. is going to 3D print trophies for the race.
Kevin W. in charge of pricing and material lists.
Drew is lead of down loading code. Kevin W. will have a thumb drive for last minute updates on location. Send sources for people to walk away with to Drew. (Note this is in three posts due to character limits on posts)

Are you sure the library is open then? Usually they are closed on Sundays in the summer.

  • Jon R.

September would work better for me, but I'll give the 11th a try anyway.

    August 5, 2013

    • Kevin W.

I want to have the Maker Weekend in September, so we need to get the planning done ASAP.

It may not be Arduino controlled, but something like this could be a relatively easy project that is likely to be useful by all and able to be constructed by each individual and completed in a day. I know it's something I'd like to have, but I'm a bit weak in my wiring and power skills...

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
