Maker Weekend: 3D Schedule

From: Kevin W.
Sent on: Friday, May 31, 2013 12:16 AM

Just wanted to let you know what I know at this point about Maker Weekend: 3D, starting tonight, May 31 at 5:00 pm. We have some exciting plans. I also have a couple of important announcements, so please take note.

5:00 - 9:00 We'll be setting up and getting hands on with some of your printers. I will be available for impromptu class on 123D Make on web, mobile and PC platforms, if there is anyone interested.

9:00 Open and Hardware Lab starts

10:00 - 11:00 Intro to OpenSCAD class. OpenSCAD is a programatic 3D modeling application.

11:00 - 12:00 Lunch

12:00 - 2:00 Mike Spray from LaserAbilities will be scanning YOUR objects and turning them into STL's. So bring some (reasonably sized, please) objects that you would like to have 3D models of and he'll do it live and in person!

2:00 - 4:00 Sketchup (formerly Google Sketchup) class by Nathan Withers. Nathan uses Sketchup on a more or less daily basis for his job, so there will be a lot to learn about making 3D models from a real expert.

4:00 - 6:30 Dinner

6:30 - 9:00 Intro to 3D Modeling with Blender by Kevin Wixson. This will essentially be the first session from the 8 week class I teach at KIA about 3D modeling with Blender. If you come you'll get a copy (perhaps digital) of the first chapter of my upcoming book, Blender for 3D Printers.

9:00 Clear out.

9:00 Open and Hardware Lab starts

12:00 - 2:00 Fabscan scanning demo. I will have my Fablab 3D scanner on hand and I'll try to use it in front of you. We might not get a scan out of it, but I'm sure we'll learn something.

2:00 - 4:00 Scanning with DAVID. Dan Dangremond will be giving a demonstration of the DAVID 3D scanning system

5:00 Event closes.

1> There is no WiFi/Internet in the facility so if you can't bring your own connection with you then you will want to have downloaded the programs for the various classes ahead of time.

2> Because this building is directly connected to the airport we're going to ask two things. First, please register when you arrive, and do so each day you come. It's a TSA thing. If there's any sort of security incident they just want to know who was there and how to contact you. Secondly, please pay attention to any posted signs at entrances and exits from the building and don't try to go through any secured doors. All the doors to the airport are monitored and security will investigate if any of the wrong doors are opened.

3> I went there yesterday and if I wasn't following Al it probably would have taken me a while to figure out where it is. We're going to try to have signs, but please review the directions before you head out so you can easily find us.

4> I'm very excited. It'll be a good weekend. See you there!
