kayak Raccoon Creek

  • May 4, 2013 · 11:00 AM

Plan B is Raccoon Creek from Green Garden to the end.  Neshanock  is just too low.

Novices CAN do this run.

We will meet at Green Garden at 11am give or take.  (there is a bridge after the shopping center and a pull off next to the creek on the left of the bridge).

Take the Aliquippa/Green Garden exit off of Rt 60.

The only time I got out of the boat was when I wanted to. It wasn't too shallow, but getting low. One had to pick the right line through the rapids. Many times it ment starting on the right of the rapids, and then zagging to the left, or vice-versa. With rain forcasted for the end of this week, I hope it puts more water into the system for next weekend. In all it was a good 12 mile paddle. Next time I will remember the sun-screen. I was so glad to get out on the water while there is still some. Thanks Mike and Linda for the beautiful trip.

Looked like tons of fun! I hope to get out on one of these trips soon. I'm kinda nervous though, been on the river only one and I tend to get stuck easily. Glad you all had fun

Oh Julie, you had the rock magnet on your boat, that's all... we all have those days.. check the level. We went at 2.2. Remember in general creeks are higher at the end. So above there, make sure you have at least that much water..

Good time was had by all. I think I get the award for ending up the most wet, with stepping in that deep hole while trying to walk my boat through the shallows.

Oh man, is it very shallow? Rethinking my adventure next week

The upper section was really nice. About half way down the grade increased and there were then wider shallow stretches and some minor rapids or shelves that we had to drop over, trying not to get hung up. Could have used a few more inches of water. That was the lowest level I'd suggest running it. I think I got hung up more because mine is a longer boat and harder to turn while moving.

    Julia,

Meet up will be near 11:00; but by the time the kayaks are unloaded, then loaded with gear, it could be as late as 12:00. We will probibly stop several times, once for lunch. Why rush a good thing? Cars will be parked at both ends. Even though it will be maybe ten miles by boat, it is only ten minutes by car.

    The map of the creek has been posted in the files section at <http://files.meetup.com/268859/raccoon-creek.jpg>;

Apparent I cannot link directly to the file. It's in the "more/files" menu section under the heading "raccoon-creek"

Will it really take that many hours?

Also once you get to the end how do you get your kayak back to your car?

      May 3, 2013

I mapped the creek from the put in to the take out at the river and it's 11.3 miles with a low gradient (not much of a current). I'd expect between 2 and 3 mph. I'm sure we would work out a car shuttle.

I am sorry but I can not make the Drive to this paddle. With the weather as nice as it is, I would love to do a stream that is more local. Sorry lakes and rivers are not much fun for me. With good weather, and good water, it will be a shame to stay home to do yard work! Would anyone like to paddle a local small stream tomorrow, or Sunday?

It looks like this creek is going to be to low anyway. I am not sure where we will end up. We are still looking for some different creeks to do that we haven't before. Will keep you updated Ben in case you don't find another partner.

I'm on the fence about this. In a canoe I can handle any class I or II that comes along but I'm not sure I want to do any rapids in a kayak yet. My boat is pretty stable but I'm not comfortable enough to use the skirt yet. I live in Ellwood City and am very close by so I may reevaluate closer to the weekend. I paddled today at Moraine and intend to hit a lake in Ohio tomorrow...maybe upper end of mosquito creek lake. looks like some interesting wetlands up there.

Ok Rob. We did this trip in a canoe. I don't think it's too nuts, but I want you to feel comfortable. If you get a chance to check out the creek from a bridge or 2, that might give you an idea what is like. Let us know

Would love to attend, but having only kayaked once on flat water, not sure that this is a good idea yet. Anyone doing any flat water this weekend?

I am not sure of this one. It's about a three hour drive, or more for me. That would be a long day.
