Paddle the Connie and Kiski Rivers on Memorial Day weekend, 3 days, 3 trips

I'm planning a paddling trip on Memorial Day weekend.  This will be 3 seperate trips on 3 seperate days, Saturday, May 25th; Sunday, May 26th; and Monday, May 27th.  We will meet at my place at 641 Canal road, Apollo, Pa. 15613 at 9:30am on all three days, set up a shuttle, and proceed to the putins.  We will do lunch on the river so please pack a lunch for yourself.  Camping is also available at my place on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights.  Please be specific as to what day(s) you will be paddling, and if you will be camping.  Please fill free to pitch a tent along the river, and there is limited floor space upstairs in the garage. The garage has a full kitchen with a stove, microwave, and 2 refrigerators.  Bath and shower facilities are available upstairs.  Please bring you're own towels and personal items to shower with.  For those camping, fill free to make you're own breakfast in the garage, or we can go to the Creekside Diner for breakfast.  After the paddle on all days, and after were cleaned up, I'll fire up the grill and make something to share with the group.  You should also bring something for yourself for dinner.  After dinner, I'll build a fire along the river and we can enjoy the evening.  Please bring a chair to sit on around the fire.

The itinery:

Saturday:  The Conemaugh river from the outflow of the Conemaugh Dam to Saltsburg. Meet at my place at 9:30am, set up a shuttle the the outflow of the Conemaugh dam and paddle to saltsburg.  This will be a 9 mile trip.

Sunday:  The Conemaugh from the bridge at Blairsville to the takeout in the backwaters of the Conemaugh Dam.  Meet at my place at 9:30am, set up a shuttle and proceed to Blairsville.  If the water is high enough, we can explore the "swamp" at the gamelands.  This will be a 9 mile trip.

Monday:  The Kiski River from Saltsburg to my place above Apollo.  Meet at my place at 9:30am, set up a shuttle to Saltsburg and paddle to my place.  This will be a 12 mile trip.

All three trips are mostly class 1, with the exception of Monday where we will have 2 short stretches of about 100 yards of mild class 2 "fun foam".  The water level should be high enough to get through on all 3 trips, unless we go into a drought, at which time I'll check the river gauge to see if there doable.  If there not, I'll change the venue of the paddle but we will still meet at my place at the prescribed time.

    Steve,

I have the car mostly packed, and hope to be on my way by 8:00 a.m. tomorrow. I will meet you all at the dam. I will be driving my old blue Volvo Wagon. The tent is in the car.

I am bringing Water mellon, cheese and crackers, and my cookies to share.

I am considering joing Rob with his marsh tour Sunday morning. I want to see all that wildlife that is reported being there.

Unless I am too sore from paddling, I will be on for Monday too.

    I am bringing my boat.

    Hello all,
It looks like the weather is shaping up nicely for the weekend, with partly sunny skies and highs in the low 70's.
Just a reminder, the shower is available upstairs in the garage to freshen up after the paddles, but please bring you're own towels and personal items.
I'll be fireing up the grill and have burgers to share with the group for dinner on all 3 days. If you like, yo are welcome to bring a snack to share. (Something simple, chips, a snack, Apple pie, etc.) There will be a fire every evening, and please bring a chair to sit on around the fire. For those camping, we can do breakfast at the Creek Side Diner in Apollo, or cook on site.
In addition to those signed up thru meetup, I have an additional 12 people comming.
The full moon is on Saturday night and we should have a multitude of stars .
I'll see everyone on their respective mornings.

Mon only for me. I have my own kayak.

    May 14, 2013

  • Steve

    Ben,
The put on on Saturday is the outflow of the Conemaugh Dam, which is located on the Conemaugh River bordering Indiana and Westmoreland Counties.
I think my place would be closer that going to the Dam, since the Dam is located on mostly back roads.

    May 13, 2013

  • Steve

    Susan,
I ran the river on Sunday from Blairsvile to the takeout in the back waters on the Conemaugh Dam, and I didn't have any rocks to worry about. The water in the pool was up about 4 feet or so, which left about 2 miles of current and flat water after that. It was a nice trip, and I was able to get into the "swamp" up one of the tributaries and play a little bit.

    May 13, 2013

  • Daniel S.

    Mon only. Have own kayaks

    May 13, 2013

  • Ben S.

I just checked with Dorthy, my GPS, and she tells me that I can make it to your home in just under two hours. I would like to make the Saturday paddle, but I don't know about making the 9:30 time at your home. What is the address of the put in. Just maybe I could meet you there instead; it may be closer.

    May 12, 2013

  • Bob

Hi! I will probably do the Saturday trip, but will not camp Saturday night. Have another committment on Sunday.

    May 10, 2013

  • Dar

I plan on doing the Saturday trip. Not camping.

    May 10, 2013

  • Ben S.

I will come Saturday, but will not be there early enough for the paddle. Leave Monday, and will bring my tent.

    May 10, 2013

  • Steve

    Susan,
I'm not familure with the of the construction of you're yak. Is it reinforced and designed for rivers or just flat water? I'm going to run that section of the river on Sunday if it doesn't rain to check it out. As always, rivers may some rocks or riffles to negociate.

In theory it's supposed to be able to handle rapids on rivers...me, I'm a novice at this kayaking thing and am nervous :) It is a reinforced hull with nylon over the chambers-so certainly not cheap, but not a hard shell either...
