Kayaking on the Kiski!

This is about an 11 mile downstream paddle from Saltsburg to Apollo. There are some mild riffles & rapids but recreational kayaks are fine on the Kiskiminetas River.
We'll put in at the public access in Saltsburg near Saltsburg River & Trail
They rent kayaks & canoes, also provide shuttle service $12.50 per boat, if desired

We can set up our own shuttle- there's plenty of parking in Saltsburg & at the public access take out at Roaring Run in Apollo.

Bring plenty of water to drink & don't forget the sunblock! Pack a lunch or snacks- we'll stop at the Avonmore pavilion for a break

After the paddle, we can relax at The Olde Salt Restaurant which is BYOB

The meetup location is Saltsburg River & Trail address. The launch is right across Water Street

Thanks Bob for sharing the Kiski & making this particular paddle possible! Saltsburg River & Trail shuttle was so convenient & reasonable. River was low, hit a few snags but still made good time : )

first time i did this section of the kiski the water was about as low as it gets. it was late summer. we spent more time walking the kayaks over rocky shallows than we did floating. we were taking our time to begin with, but with all the walking on slippery river rocks and dragging our boats, it took us something like 8 hours. we would stop to swim at deep pools. i was snorkeling and seeing some nice fish.

Yes, that first stretch after Saltsburg can be challenge when the water is low, haven't had problems past Avonmore so far : )

The present water level is running about 3.2 on my gauge, so you should have an enjoyable float.
I would like to do this, but I have a grad party to attend at 4pm. I may drive up to Saltsburg to see you off.

Hi Janet! When do you expect to be off the river? I'm interested in going, but have plans with my daughter for the evening. I definitely would not be interested in hanging for dinner after and am concerned about getting home too late.

Hi Cindy, I think we should be off the river by 4P at the very latest, probably earlier since so far no one needs to rent a boat. The paddle itself is 3-4 hrs & we don't have to stop in Avonmore, the group can decide

I finally bought an inflatable kayak. Hope to be on the water soon :)

Congrats! I think an inflatable is OK for the Kiski but not sure. See you on the water soon : )
