A paddle on the Kiski in 4 parts.

This trip is being held in conjunction with the Soup Hike, which will be held at my place on Saturday, July 20th, at 2:30pm. For information on the Soup Hike, please go to the Pittsburgh Hiking Group and click on Soup Hike for Saturday, July 20th.  In a nutshell, the Soup HIke is a hike where people bring something to share with a few people, soup, brownies, pie, chips, etc.  We then go on a 5 mile easy hike, and upon returning, sample the goodies that people brought.  This trip will be in 4 parts. You can sign up for all 4 parts, or any one of them.  Please read the headings carefully.

Part 1. Hike -- Meet at my place on Saturday, July 20, at 2:30pm, and do an easy 5 mile hike.

Part 2. Dinner -- After the hike, at approximately 6pm, we'll feast on the various soups and dishes that people brought to eat. You should bring a snack or something to share, brownies, chips, pie, etc.  After dinner, I'll build a fire along the river and we can enjoy the evening, and share tales of incredible feats. Please bring a chair to sit on around the fire.

Part 3. Camping -- Everyone is welcome to camp along the river.  In the morning, we'll do breakfast at the creekside across the river.

Part 4. Paddling -- Sunday, July 21st, 9:30am. We'll do a 12 mile paddle on the Kiski River. We'll meet at my place no later than 9:30am, set up a shuttle to Saltsburg, and do a leasurly 12 mile paddle on the river. We'll do lunch in Avonmore, and then stop at Copper Head Cove for a swim break. We'll then proced to my place and take out.  The Kiski is a docile class 1 river with a couple of spots of mild class 2 "fun foam".

When signing up, please be specific as to what part(s), you will be attending.
The shower is available upstairs in the garage for any one who wants to freshen up. Please bring you're own towels and personal items.
After the paddle on Sunday, and we retrieve the vehicles from the shuttle, I'll fire up the grill and make burgers for everyone. We can also munch on left overs from the previous days Soup Hike.

You're welcome to come early on Saturday to stow things and set up a tent if you like.

thanks Steve. good float! saw a Cormorant (that would be Double-crested) fly close by us heading up river, between Saltsburg and Avonmore, near the high voltage lines that span the river.

Oh hells bells...put me down for the hike too. That's all four stages of fun...probably more than is allowed by law.

OK. revising my RSVP. It's gonna start raining in the next two hours and looks like it's a very deep group of storms back through Ohio and Indiana. I'd rather not hike in the rain so I'll just come sometime this evening to hang out, then do the river tomorrow...I don't much care if I'm doing the river in the rain.

I did a sunrise paddle on the Kiski this morning and the water level and temperature was great. I got off the water at about 9:20am, and there was a multitude of wildlife in and around the water.
Presently, we have about 27 people doing this paddle, and although we try to be off the water by 4pm, there are no guarantees with this amount of people going. It depends on how long we take for lunch, and the swim break.
Everyone who is not camping from the soup hike, should be at my place and ready to leave no later than 9:30am on Sunday.

I'll try to make part 4, just need to know where and when to meet. In the event Tim gets too friendly with a copperhead and it wants to kiss him I have a snake bite kit, lol.

what all do you need for the kayaking part

    July 18, 2013

    • Rob

a boat & paddle, PFD, and a whistle are the bare minimum for safety. Something to bail out the boat if you get swamped is a good idea. Think about also having sunscreen, dry clothes to change into, and water/snacks for on the water. sunglasses are good. This river really does not require the spray skirt.

1,2 AND 4 FOR SURE! I NEED TO SEE TIM PLAY WITH A COPPERHEAD

We'll just be at the Sunday paddle, Part 4. Looking forward to it!

The river is presently running at 3'2" on MY guage. Thats a nice level to paddle. Even if it drops to 2'8", there isn't a problem with rock gardens, and no portage is necessary if you stay in the channels. I never used a spray skirt on the kiski, however, you may get splashed a little at the two foam areas.

    July 16, 2013

  • BarryM

Never been on this river before. It doesn't sound like a spray skirt is needed. Is that the case? Do you expect to have to portage around shallow areas?

    July 16, 2013

  • Tom F.

I also have an extra kayak if anyone needs one.

    July 15, 2013

  • Tom F.

I will be there for Part 4.

  • Nikki

Part 4: will paddle the 12 miles on Sunday

    July 15, 2013

  • Steve

We usually try to be off the river by 4pm, but this depends on water levels, how long we take for lunch, and the swim break.

    July 11, 2013

    • Jennifer J.

Thanks for the information! I have to be off the river by 5pm to make another event in the evening.

      July 15, 2013

I screwed up my RSVP- I will attend Parts 1 and 4 for sure. Hopefully 2 as well. Sorry I clicked too soon.

    July 13, 2013

  • Jennifer J.

Attending part 4 only. Will we be finished kayaking by 4:30pm?

    July 10, 2013

  • Dar

Unless something comes up, I will be attending all parts of Soup Hike and paddle.

I rever to class 2 "fun foam" as slightly swift moving water with riffles and a few rocks sticking out of the water. The water is shallow and you may or may not get splashed, and you may get a little water in you're boat. I believe it to be a little higher than class 1, and not quite class 2. For the most part, most folks who have done the Kiski usually wind up laughing after going through this area, and they want to do it again.

    July 1, 2013

  • Kodiak F.

I'm googling around for pictures of 'class II fun foam'. I'm pretty new to kayaking and don't want anyone to have to fish me out of the drink.

    I'd be paddling with a Pungo 120.
