Paddle down Allegheny River and Back at Tarentum Fish and Boat Access

This trip is open to kayaks, canoes, paddle boards, and similar types of boats.  If in doubt- please call me at[masked]-8045.  If paddling something other than a kayak- consider whether or not you can keep up with kayaks.  I expect that we will cover 4-5 miles round trip.

Lets meet at 5:45PM at the Tarentum Fish and Boat Commission boat ramp to kayak/ paddle a boat for about an hour down the Allegheny River.  The return trip will take longer- up to 1 hour and 35 minutes (although an hour and 20 minutes is typical).  If we depart by 6PM at the latest that means paddling until 8:20PM- 8:35PM (earlier if we get paddling sooner).  8:45PM is posted to include loading time for boats.  Since the sunset is now 8:02PM, we will try to be back around civil twilight (before it gets too dark to see well on the water).  We will not see the moon, however the areas we will paddle in will be somewhat lit by surrounding homes and businesses.  This part of the Allegheny River (between locks 3 and 4) will take us past New Kensington on the East and Creighton on the West.  I expect that there will be a few more motor boats on this pool of the river than the Freeport section so please stick together on the side of the river closest to the launch ramp on the return part of the trip after sunset.  If we get back earlier than planned or if people want to paddle a little extra- just before the put in/ take out is where Bull Creek enters the Allegheny River and it may be fun to take a little side trip until we reach the end of the backwater (not too far- maybe 10 to 15 minutes total out and back.

Please be advised that since this is a PA Fish and Boat Commission Access Point you must have: a current launch sticker (these cost $18).  If you do not have one- they can be obtained by contacting the Fish and Boat Commission- they will direct you where to go locally to purchase a sticker.  I do not know these locations since I have always obtained my stickers through the mail.

a life jacket and whistle should be worn but at the very least they must be on your boat.

A flashlight or head lamp is required after sunset.  If you have another suitable means of illumination approved by the Coast Guard and or PA Fish Commission that will work.

Failure to have the Bold items may result in a fine if caught by an enforcement officer.

I recommend bringing something to drink or a snack, and an extra layer if it is cool.

bilge pumps, paddle floats and other safety equipment to get back in you boat is good to bring if you have it.  I don't plan to tip, but it has happened unexpectedly and I was glad to have my pump.  It is also good to have a cell phone in a dry bag, ziplock or other water proof container just in case.  In the event of rain (not storms) this trip will still go- but you may want a spray skirt to keep your boat dry.  A camera is nice too- so that we can have pictures to post- I will try to remember to bring mine.

I have led several other successful meetups in the Freeport Area recently however this is my first time leading a twilight paddle (planning to finish after sunset).  If anyone has further insight into the Fish and Boat Commission requirements for kayaks, or other small human powered paddle crafts please post them for all to see.

This trip will run unless there is lightening or thunder at launch time (or storms are predicted on the radar) to arrive during the time we will be on the water.  A low chance of storms may mean shortening the trip- or turning around if we hear thunder when on the water.  If the weather is questionable please call me at[masked] to see whether the trip is still on.

For those who use GPS- plug these numbers in- they should work, but if in doubt call me or consult the written directions since I do not use GPS and can't verify them.

If you paddle with us and must turn back early- please let me know so that we aren't looking for you.  The same goes if you prefer to paddle past the group turn around point.  If you choose to paddle further I may not be around when you arrive back at the boat launch area.

I will not be going for any food or beverages after the paddle but you are welcome to organize and do that after this meetup if you choose.
