This trip is open to kayaks, canoes, paddle boards, and similar types of boats. If in doubt- please call me at[masked]-8045. If paddling something other than a kayak- consider whether or not you can keep up with kayaks. I expect that we will cover 4-5 miles round trip.
Lets meet at 6:15PM at the Leechburg boat ramp to kayak/ paddle for about an hour to an hour and 10 minutes up the Kiskiminetas River (the return trip should be faster). We will likely be on the water past the 7:49PM sunset but should be back by 8:15PM (Civil Twilight) before it gets too dark to see well. 8:30PM is posted to include loading time for boats. We will not likely to see the moon. We should be paddling through populated areas (Leechburg, Hyde Park, and maybe even North Vandergrift).
This trip is Exploratory since I have only drove by this access point and others nearby once to check the general river conditions. What I could see looked good- but there are no guarantees. If the water is shallow or we hit a lot of rocks we can turn around and paddle a bit downriver from the put in, or get out and move our boats to where they will float.
Twilight Civil: 8:16pm
Twilight Nautical: 8:50pm
Twilight Astronomical: 9:24pm
Day length: 13h 1m
This is not a PA Fish and Boat Commission Access Point so stickers are optional on boats.
I believe a lifejacket and whistle must be on board on all PA waterways. Please bring a light source for after sunset. Head lamps and flashlights are good as are lights made for boats.
I recommend bringing something to drink or a snack, and an extra layer if you get cold easily. It is expected to be in the 60's and dropping.
bilge pumps, paddle floats and other safety equipment to get back in you boat are good to bring if you have them. I don't plan to tip, but it has happened unexpectedly and I was glad to have my pump. It is also good to have a cell phone in a dry bag, ziplock or other water proof container just in case. In the event of rain (not storms) this trip will still go- but you may want a spray skirt to keep your boat dry. A camera is nice too- so that we can have pictures to post- I will try to remember to bring mine. (I don't think we'll be in water that is very deep so it should be possible to push your boat to shore standing or get back in on the water if you tip)
This trip will run unless there is lightening or thunder at launch time (or storms are predicted on the radar) to arrive during the time we will be on the water. A low chance of storms may mean shortening the trip- or turning around if we hear thunder when on the water. If the weather is questionable please call me at[masked] to see whether the trip is still on.

If you paddle with us and must turn back early- please let me know so that we aren't looking for you. The same goes if you prefer to paddle past the group turn around point. If you choose to paddle further I may not be around when you arrive back at the boat launch area.
I apologize for the short notice on this trip- I had been doing trips on Mondays but with Memorial Day I decided not to do a Monday- seeing the expected weather it looked like this paddle could work on a Tuesday.
