Friday Evening Kayak Paddle at Moraine

  • June 6, 2014 · 6:45 PM
  • McDannel's Launch

This is a leisurely evening paddle at Moraine St. Park (Lake Arthur). We will meet at McDannel's Launch at 6:45 and socially paddle around the west end of the lake until dusk or shortly thereafter. Please use the location link above to find McDannel's if you don't know where to go. The google-maps locator at http://www.maps.google.com/ is also very good. Simply type in the coordinates N[masked], W[masked] and it will display a scaleable map to find us.

On a calm summer evening the lake becomes like glass as the sun sets. We also begin to see deer coming to the waters edge to drink. I'm sure they don't know what to make of the half humans sticking out of the water.

Since there is the possibility of being on the water after dusk/dark participants must have a source of white light (headlamp or flashlight), as well as PFD and whistle.

After paddling, if there is interest, we may end up at The Cabin on Rt. 19 in Zelienople for a late supper and/or drinks. They serve food till 11pm on Friday nights.

This activity is cross-posted on Western PA Kayaking, Pittsburgh Kayakers and Pittsburgh Adventure Lovers meetups. Please register only once.

Beautiful night paddle! Thanks for the combined paddle. I met some cool people as far as West Virginia (2-1/2 hrs drive) and it was worth it!

I have red/green mounted lights, will this be ok instead of white lights?

From the PA Fish & Boat Commision website: Lights:
Any kayak, canoe, inflatable raft or paddleboard on the water after dusk must have a hand-held or installed white light to be displayed in time to avoid a collision with another craft. When anchored or moored after dusk, an all-round white light must be displayed where it can best be seen 360 degrees.

Don't forget, all boats need a current DCNR or PA Fish & Boat Commission launch permit sticker. You can get one at the park office (don't know what time they close) or buy online and print a temporary permit that's good until you receive the sticker (http://fishandboat.com/registration.htm)
