4th of July Kayak/Canoe Fireworks Outing

Update[masked]:30pm: We will want to be on the water and heading towards the Point no later than 8:45pm. Fireworks are to start at 9:35pm.

The projected flow at 6:00pm on July 4th is 28.1kcfs. This is faster than normal and be aware that intermediate paddling skills are recommended.

It may also be best to have an all-round white light visible while in the flotilla when at the Point. If you're unsure of the rules, please visit http://fishandboat.com/boatcrs/03boathandbook/chap2_09_night.htm.

Join L.L.Bean for a free kayak/canoe outing from Millvale towards the Point where we'll have a front row view of the EQT “Flashes of Freedom” Fireworks, widely considered one of the Top 10, 4th of July displays in the country.

The performance traditionally honors all men and women in uniform [military, fire, police, EMT], dedicated to the protection, freedom and love of our great nation. Shot from barges anchored in the city’s renowned confluence and against its scenic skyline, the show attracts hundreds of thousands of spectators year after year.

Update[masked]: Safety Zone (SZ) information has been released... Our flotilla will be created on the Allegheny River approximately 0.05 miles from the Point.

Eric posted the following video on the L.L.Bean Pittsburgh Outdoor Adventure Club

Here's a video compilation I made from my GoPro footage. It's my first video edit, so go easy on me. :)

Excellent footage, Snakeguy! I'm not familiar with a Go Pro. Is there a remote on/off/control system to activate while riding?

Does anyone have tips on a cheap way to comply with the 360 degree white light rule? I am renting two kayaks with a friend so I'd rather not buy two $30 kayak lights just for tomorrow night.

    Excited to join you all!

      Would glow sticks comply?

Hi , Robert! Nikki and I are going down early to paddle a bit. we unRSVPed so as not to mess up your numbers. we done this trip 5-6 times. we'll bring waivers with us. if we find you, great, but don't worry about where we are. have fun!

    July 4, 2014

  • Tom

I may meetup with you at the point since I live on the north shore

    1 · July 4, 2014

Please respond, I cannot print the waiver due to meetup being blocked at work. I do not have sprinter at home and don't want to show up and possibly not be allowed to paddle because I don't have a printed paper waiver. Will paper waivers be available at the put in for those without printer access? Going to the library is not an option for me this week since I am working 14 hour days.

There will be paper waivers available (source: Kevin's response to an earlier comment)

Hi Michael C-Adventurer: Yes, paper participant agreements will be available at the launch site. Best -Robert

Is there sufficient parking at Millvale? Do we arrive at 8:30 or have boats in the water at 8:30?

There was a rack down by the launch last year. I haven't been there this year to confirm.

Kevin, I talked my wife into buying a kayak and going on this trip. I added her as a guest just no and I didn't see any message about max capacity on participants. Just want to confirm there is room for one more.
    Thank you,

Can some paper participant agreements be brought to the location. I do not have a printer and would be happy to complete a paper copy before the trip. Although I can see the participant agreement online, I can not complete and submit it without printing it?
