Ever experience a bat flight at dusk? We'll meet at the Moraine Rt. 528 boat launch at 7:00pm and paddle until dusk, ending up at the Mt. Zion Church launch (no longer used), where we will beach the boats and head to the cemetery to watch the bats leave their condominum as they head out into the night to feed. Historically there have been upwards of 1000 bats in this condo but white-nose-syndrome infection has devastated the population in recent years. This is an exploratory trip to see how many bats still use the condo. I'll give a short presentation on white-nose-syndrome: what it is, and how it has affected the bat populations. We'll hang around the bat condo for a while or so just after dark, then paddle back to the 528 boat launch in the dark. This is a BYOB event (bring your own boat), and you must have a whistle, PFD, and white light for signalling. If you are a PA resident your kayak must also have either a DCNR or PA Fish Commision launch sticker.
Participants are asked to stage their kayaks in the grass by the launch, but to NOT launch until everyone has arrived and we've done introductions. This makes it easier for me to get a head count if I'm not guessing who is in our group that has already launched.
