Packsaddle Gap - Conemaugh River thru Chestnut Ridge

I didn't expect the Conemaugh River to be high enough for a float this month. the recent rains have been enough to raise the river level. we'll meet at the Walmart parking lot on route 22 in Blairsville at 9:30 AM, where we will work out the shuttle details and transfer boats. before heading to the put-in at Robinson, Indiana County, we'll leave shuttle vehicles at the Bairdstown bridge take-out in Blairsville.

Blairsville WalMart is to the right side if you are heading east on Rt22, after a car dealership and before the Rt 119 intersection. at a traffic light turn right onto Resort Dr, into Resort Plaza. make the next left in the plaza parking lot and go straight to the WalMart end of the parking lot. we'll meet at the edge of the lot adjacent to Club Lane, in view of the Advance Auto Parts store.

at the Seward gage the forecast water level for Sunday is 3 ft. if the water level at the seward gage reports 2.4 ft or less this float is not do-able and will be canceled.

this float will be 5 hours on the river, and includes class I and class II whitewater. expect to get wet. have something for bailing.

directions to the put in at Robinson:

From Blairsville take Rt22 East to the Rt 259 South exit, about 7 miles.

Take Rt 259 South to Robinson, about 4 miles.

In Robinson turn left onto Caroline Street, go 1/3 mile to the Robinson Community Center on the right, a pale pink colored building with gravel parking lot. If you miss Caroline St and cross the bridge over the river (into Bolivar, Westmoreland County) you've gone too far.

directions to the take-out at Bairdstown Bridge, Blairsville:

West of Blairsville, exit Rt22 right, onto Rt217 South, the Blairsville exit just after the bridge over Conemaugh River. Slow down after the bridge, the exit comes up suddenly.

At the stop sign make a right onto N Walnut Street, which is Rt217 South, straight into downtown Blairsville, through a railroad underpass.

At the traffic light and Sheetz Convenience Store turn right onto W Market Street, heading west.

Follow W Market Street 3 blocks, pass a Gazebo, continue down hill.

Turn right just before the bridge and continue a short distance to the gravel parking lot.

The distances between turns in Blairsville are short, under 1 mile.

Six of us did this float. The weather was great. The river was running at 2.7 feet as recorded by the Seward gage. The water was a little cooler than it had been, and muddied by the recent rain. We were on the water before 11 A and off the water around 2:30 P. We did this float in 4 hours, it can take 5 hours to do if the river is lower. Thanks to all who came on such short notice.
