Re: [kayaking-129] Buffalo Creek, Bethany-Wellsburg 9/2/13

All,

The water is not as high as I would like, but do-able.  With all the rain that was predicted, little fell.  The forecast yesterday was for 60% chance of thunder storms, and a sprinkle fell.  The forecast today is for 60% chance of thunder storms, and as for now there are none on the weather radar.  The forecast for tomorrow is for 60% chance of thunder storms; will they be right?

Here is the stream Gage for Wheeling Creek:  http://waterdata.usgs.gov/wv/nwis/uv?site_no=03112000

It is just below 1.7 feet.  I like it when it is at a solid 2.0, and will not go at 1.5.  At 1.5 there is a good deal of dragging.  Buffalo Creek has a similar water flow as Wheeling Creek.  I went to see Wheeling Creek just a bit ago and I would do it so I am still planning to paddle Buffalo Creek tomorrow.  If the water is not good, there is a secondary Paddle down Wheeling Creek, or around Wheeling Island we can do.

Please respond to me by email if you are coming, or not:  [address removed]

I am going to be at a concert tonight, then fireworks, and will not be in until late.  My cell is:[masked] if you would like to phone in the later morning.

Meetup is at 1:00 at the intersections of W. Va. Route 2, and W. Va. Route 67 in Wellsburg.  Turn toward the river at the traffic signal; it is less then a hundred yards.  It may take four hours to paddle, we will brake for a snack you will bring.  Then if you like we can have dinner together.

I am hoping it all works out for the best,

Ben

Barb,

The take out would be the intersection of Route 2, and Route 67 in Wellsburg, WV.  The put in is on Hukill Run Road, not far from Bethany, WV.  I am not sure how far it would be for you to either spot.  Route 22 west to Route 2 then south to Route 67.  Or cut through the country to Bethany.

If you have a GPS, punch in the intersections and tell me what it says.

Marie Wroble is joining us.  I am not sure how many more yet because it is early.

Tools,  Everyone.

With rain in the forecast, and the stream levels at a good height now, I am planning a paddle down Buffalo Creek, from Bethany, WV to Wellsburg, WV next Monday, Labor Day.  This is a scenic paddle of about 12 miles with the current, and has class 1 rapids at most.  The only flat water is the last two miles because of the river back up.  There is a fair amount of wildlife along this stream.

I am thinking a good start time would be near 11:00, and a stop for lunch midway.  Expect maybe four hours of paddling, plus the lunch break.

I did this paddle last spring with Linda, and Mike and liked it very much.  It would be a good beginners paddle.

Ben
