Foundation Paddling/Basic Skills
This class covers directional control, paddling forwards & backwards, basic assisted rescue and other necessary skills. This is the minimum preparation for SK2 trips.
SPIN/Advanced Strokes & Rescues
This class extends directional control, forward stroke and rescues and introduces group paddling dynamics and risk assessment, towing, inland navigation and tides, and inland group leadership. This class will help you be much more comfortable on SK2 trips and inland SK3 trips.
This class takes the previous skills and moves them offshore in moderate conditions, and adds towing and rescue in waves, launching and landing in surf and group management for surf conditions. The skills in this class will prepare you for open-water SK3 trips.
This two-day course covers weather, tides, trip planning and plotting, on-water orientation, compensation for winds and currents, and much more related information. Day one is classroom, day two is on-water.
How to survey fish, manatees, and bottom features from the safety and comfort of your own cockpit. You can learn rolling with Euro or Greenland style paddles, in sea kayaks or river boats.
Forward Stroke Clinic
Intensive training for the stroke you use the most. You'll be surprised how much energy you can save by paying attention to details and improving the efficiency of your stroke.
This class covers "bigger" water than the SPotS class and focuses more on course maintenance, paddler safety, and emergency preparedness/response in adverse conditions. This course practices skills in preparation for SK4 trips.

“ I was remarkably fortunate to end up with a "Private" lesson with Jeff. He was thorough, patient and obviously sincere in his desire to take my skills to a new level. I enjoyed the experience thoroughly. Rich Loebl ”
“ I liked that you had time for us to practice the skills you showed. I enjoyed paddling through the mangroves. Looking forward to the spin class. ”
“ I am glad that I took the basic session, I had droughts if I should attend a beginner's session since I have some experience, and found out that with some basic correct techniques, I maneuver much better and feel more secure with the kayak. Less effort more results. Example: For some time I practice 360 degrees turn, without success. It takes me like 30 strokes and 30 feet radius to turn. Jeff demonstrated and explained the turn in just 2 minutes, and I did it the first time so good (on spot in 10 strokes) I began to laugh- That easy? That simple? Jeff is a unique teacher; he has great knowledge which he is happy to share, and knows how to deliver this knowledge to each individual in his own way and pace. I am looking forward for the next lesson, I plan to take as many as I can from him. ”
“ Very informative and fun ”
“ Great class. I've paddled before, but never really knew how to maneuver a sea kayak. How amazing to learn how to edge and turn! The class has me now wanting my own boat and I would love to get my BCU 3 star certification. ”
“ I hope Kayak Jeff is able to continue the classes. It was great and very
“ I learned a lot in this class. Looking forward to the next one. ”

“ We learned a lot of new paddling techniques: Forward Paddling Open Grip Paddling (Paddle Extension) Backward Paddling Edging w/ Turns Sit-In Rescue Quick Turns Quick Stops & Reverses And very informative Safety Tips. Jeff is an excellent instructor!!! He's a natural and he knows his stuff. Looking

“ Excellent introduction to kayaking for basic skills and safety. Very knowledgeable instructor-Thank You Jeff!
“ Kayak Jeff was very professional in demonstrating basic paddling techniques and safety requirements. I have been kayaking almost six months, but now have a new perspective on the activity. The new techniques and good habits broadened my skills. Now I will practice them! The other members of the class were very friendly and I enjoyed the class very much! Others should take the class if they are new to kayaking and think they know what do! ”
“ Jeff's an excellent instructor! He took the time to make sure everyone in the class mastered each skill he taught. Thanks for making sure I could hear you Jeff. I'll be more confident with my paddling on the next outing. ”SPIN/Advanced Strokes & Rescues
“ Jeff lead an amazing class! I am relatively new to Kayaking however, as a Rescue Diver and USCG Master of Motor Vessel, Captain I was pleased to have Jeff increase my understanding of navigation as well as rescue techniques. His individual attention bridged the gap between the levels of the different
without anyone left out or wanting. I would recommend this class to anyone. ”
“ Jeff is a fantastic coach. He is very patient and tailors his instruction to the unique needs of each paddler. The class started at 8 a.m. and we did not get off the water until after 5 p.m. Incredible day! My husband and I both felt that we dramatically increased our proficiency and confidence on the water. I highly recommend SPIN class to anyone who has had some basic skills training in paddling a touring sea kayak and is ready to take their skills to the next level. ”
“ An excellent class taught by an excellent instructor. I would highly recommend this class to anybody interested in advancing their kayaking skills. ”
“ A must do class for every paddler, Group paddlers must not participate the group unless made this lesson! I feel now more confident to be in the water, knowing that I have more options and solutions (which I will now have to practice). A workout with other paddlers gave me confidence that I am good
hands if something goes wrong. Everybody that participated in this lesson! The theoretical lesson given by Jeff is super professional and educating - Navy standards! Thanks ”
“ Great class! I learned a great deal - including a number of things about group dynamics, trip prep, and equipment. I was especially happy that I was able to really improve my draw and sculling draw strokes and my low brace turn. Also enjoyed the opportunity to practice both self and aided rescues. Jeff is a wonderful instructor - he has tremendous patience and explains things in a way that's really easy to understand. Enjoyed meeting Eyal and paddling with Shana again. It was a great group - we all had fun in a pretty stress-free learning environment. Having the dolphins swim beside us was a special treat! I would recommend this class for anyone who is paddling on a consistent basis, anyone who wants to improve their paddling skills, or anyone who participates in the Meetup paddles. ”SPotSKayak Navigation
“ Anyone who is going to be on a Kayak should take this class it really help me understand, and put together Weather, Tides, Winds, and direction on the water. The class was great I would like to take again next it comes up. I really feel this skills are a must. I have over 10 years on the water, and this skills really help me address some major gaps. I was lucky this far, but do not want to take any chances in the future. If you have not taken this class make the time. ”
“ Today we took what we have learned so far and applied it to the water. The navigation class gives you the tools to properly navigate using a chart, compass and your brain. Jeff has many helpful tricks that make understanding navigation easy. In the past I have relied heavy on my GPS to be my primary
navigation aid. After completing this course my GPS will be may backup navigation tool. This class is a must for those who what to explore the Everglade or 1000 Islands. The class is presented in such a way that it's easy to understand. ”
“ Great course to develop necessary navigation skills. Jeff taught us how to read maps, plot courses and use compasses. This is a crucial skill if you want to know how to get from point "a" to point "B" with accuracy and confidence. I would highly recommend this course to any kayaker regardless of skill level. Everybody needs to know how to use maps and compasses. Jeff is a great instructor. ”
“ It's amazing how much information you can cram into your brain in two days, especially if both your classmates and the instructor are really great folks to learn with!! Excellent experience, highly recommended to everyone who wishes to paddle beyond the local canals. ”Rolling
“ Great day on the water, hanging out with old friends and meeting some new ones. Learned some important new skills, such as the bow rescue. Jeff is an excellent, patient coach who makes you feel safe when doing scary things (like turning your kayak upside down!). Looking forward to the next time Jeff offers this class, so I make even more progress towards getting a consistent roll down. ”
Kevin and Darlene
“ Another great class led by Kayak Jeff. Darlene got the sweep roll figured out and I learned the C to C roll. A good time was had by all who attended. Finished it off with lunch at Jimbo's Sandbar. Looking forward to the next one. BTW, the paypal link set-up is a great idea and worked perfectly. Thanks Jeff and Whitney! ”
“ Had a great time. Jeff is an excellent instructor. Got the basics down and will practice. A must have is a storm Cag!! ”
“ Why from our entire group only 4 people are interested and participating the Rolling class? Does it mean that everybody else is mastering Kayak Rolling and only 4 are still rolling half way? This is my second time and I need more classes. Everyone please!!! register so we can have more classes. ”
“ Excellent instruction, learned to roll 2 different ways, now I need to get out & practice some more! ”
“ Jeff is a really great and patient instructor. The class exceeded my expectations. ”
Maria and skip
“ Skip: Great time. Liked the smaller class as he was able to give attention to each person and the various skill levels. We will both be taking additional classes from him. Maria: As someone who had much trepidation regarding this class and being upside down in a boat Jeff's teaching style worked wonders on me. As a result I feel I did really well and had a good time. When's the next class Jeff? ”Forward Stroke Clinic
“ This was a great class. I learned a great deal and received lots of good tips that I can use to practice. Michael and Lissette are wonderful instructors! ”
“ Very helpful. Anyone who is serious about kayaking should take it. ”
“ Very good Clinic with step by step instruction and critique. ”
“ Excellent. I learned a lot. We all left with a lot to work on. ”Open WaterBCU 2-Star
“ Michael and Lissette were great instructors. Whitney kept telling me to use my abs more in paddling but they actually got me to do it. We had a brief downpour the first day, but Nigel the wonder dog kept everybody's spirits up. I should have taken this class a long time ago before I got used to paddling inefficiently. ”
“ Michael and Lissette are excellent instructors who do a remarkable job of disabusing you of the idea that you are paddling well and then show you how to do it right. ”
“ Great course, even with the photos of me sprawled out over the back of my boat :) Darn it! I got in the boat, more than once. Lissette and Michael are excellent coaches. I very much enjoyed the course and everything I learned. Thanks you both for all the tips and trick. I'm looking forward to the next
course! No photos of my behind next time. Unless it shrinks considerably by then. ;) ”
“ Day One - Canoes: I hadn't really been in a canoe since my teens (many moons ago). It was great to learn the basics and my son and I really enjoyed working in tandem. Day two - Kayaks was great. This course is great for anyone who wants to be more comfortable on the water in a small craft. ”
“ Canoe Day - I thought it was silly to have to learn Open Canoe (never did it, don't want it!), but having learned the basics of solo and front and rear positions in a tandem, I have to say that it might be interesting to buy or build one. The instruction was excellent and enlightening, and there were a variety of canoes to experience. Kayak Day - I've had classes that covered everything we went over, but if you think you've learned it all the first (or second or third) time, bear in mind that all you have to do to get
a fresh look at something is to switch coaches - I had my eyes opened about how I do my forward stroke (not too well, for the record) and my roll (need to learn a couple more types); and this was after the formal class!! In class I heard again that I should focus more on finesse and let go my tendency to push through things, and that I need to work on physical flexibility and that we all should practice our rescues until they're instinctive. Expect some play days!! ”
