For 2010 we have established Thursday Night Kayaking & Canoe Training events. Every Thursday night we will be putting in at various parks around the Madison area. We will paddle up to couple of hours and then break. Events are for beginners and intermediate skilled paddlers, giving you an opportunity to strengthen your skills for longer events that normally take place on weekends. I’ve found good maps of the waterways in and around Madison. And, I’ll be referring to launching points based on these maps. The maps are found at (http://www.capitolwat...) I personally have not been to most of these locations but will scout them prior to scheduling. If you have a favorite spot, give me a call or e-mail. Our first concern for Thursday night is safety (calm water/low wind), ease of access, and a scenic area. We want to be on the water for about 1-2 hours.
The lower Yahara River Route from about Hwy 51 in McFarland to Fish Camp Park is our Thursday Night Kayaking Route. A group scouted this route on Memorial Day and it was very enjoyable, one of the nicest trips I've taken. It's about 4 miles long. We averaged 2.6 miles per hour paddling slowly and taking pictures. There is some car shuttling involved with this route so we want to meetup at 6:00pm at the Jaeger Rd launch & unload the kayaks, and shuttle cars to Fish Camp Park. Then we will put in at Jaeger Rd at approximately 6:30pm. The route is an easy 4 miles downstream. Does not take much effort and is very scenic. We should be exiting at dusk. There is a launching fee with Dane County but when we follow the letter of the law...we don't have to pay it. (we have a vehicle that is fully licensed for 2010 and we will use that vehicle to launch/exit Fish Camp Park, then bring your kayak to you at the parks entrance.)
If we need to cancel this event, it will be posted at 5:00pm.
Please bring your safety equipment. Lighting is not needed.
A really good weather report can be found here: http://www.weather.co...
PS We've solved the computer glitch with this launch point. The launch point is Jaeger Rd. (we were using street...and Google computer maps didn't like that) Its an easy road to miss, very narrow with the Road sign tucked into large Arbor Vitae. The automatic Google map and directions are working now.
