Magical Moonlight Paddle

Sunday, August 10, 5:30pm, meet at Bartels Beach on Rock Lake. Share a light picnic meal, and afterward paddle the lake shore and marsh. Bring a picnic dinner for yourself and something to share (optional). We will eat & socialize 5:30-6:30pm, then get on the water. If you cannot come for the meal you are welcome to arrive just in time to paddle.

Also bring your usual paddling gear, and a light. Yes, a light is essential - camping headlight, clip-on bike light, flashlight, something - and please arrive and time your picnic set-up and boat unloading so we are on the water by 7pm.

At sundown the lake gets quiet, and power boats are supposed to get off the water at 7pm. Weather is usually good this time of year. If weather turns bad a cancellation notice will be posted at 4pm. Otherwise come and enjoy the trip.

Erin Jannsen and Reid Miller will co-lead this fun paddle under the stars. It is a beginner-friendly outing, and longer boats may be a plus. The moon is full that night and rises about 8pm. Plan on 2 hours on the water. Take a swim afterward if you like. There may be brownies and a small fire to end the night, too.

Directions: From I94 take Hy 89, Lake Mills exit. Turn right on Lake St. Turn left on S. Ferry St. Find Bartels Beach on right. For info contact Reid at 608.852.4524.

Hi, again, paddlers. Some paddlers have asked for recipes for dishes shared at yesterday's potluck, including Erin's bean, pecans, & cottage salad; Sue's beet paste; the corn and red beans mixture; and something with cheese, lettuce, and nuts. My gluten free brownies were Johnny's brand mix, and I sub'd Stonyfield Organic vanilla yogurt for water. Going forward I'll use a 13 x9 pan for 'lower profile' brownies. Does that sound gourmet? LOL. I love recipe exchanges and suppose we can pass them through these Meetup comments boxes. Speaking for my self, my inbox is ready to receiving recipe notifications. Some paddlers say, "Paddle once, eat twice." Sounds tasty to me, and who knows perhaps we'll get nicknamed the 'Potluck Paddlers.' The choice is up to each of us to ask for and share recipes if we like. Make your preference known. Caio....er chow....er chow-chow. Good thing I just ate dinner. Hope we paddle again soon. More invitations coming soon.

Hey, magical moonlight paddle trippers. Anyone willing to share pics of yesterday's Rock Lake paddle, please text or email them to me at[masked], or [masked], will you? I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

The potluck & paddling trip were great fun. A total of 29 friendly folks attended. Highlights of the potluck were Erin's cottage cheese, bean & pecan salad, and Sue's beet humus. The marsh was choked with weeds, but the lake was smooth and silky to paddle. An early spring trip into the marsh and beyond when the weeds are low is suggested. Clouds blocked viewing the super moon from the water, but the sky was clear and the moon bright and beautiful on the trip home.

The "awesome sunset" made up for what the super moon couldn't deliver!

It looks like the magical moonlight has turned into magical cloudy skies for this evening and tonight...

The moon did come out, just a little late. Was beautiful for the pack up and drive home. Sunset and company was well worth it.
